When 93% of English Learners in grades 1-5 were not on track to proficiency, however, the district knew some changes were needed. In response, KCSD developed a multi-phased plan that included a strong focus on teaching explicit phonics, using Benchmark Phonics and Phonics Intervention. This District Partnership Success Story recounts how the Kennett Consolidated School District moved the needle, growing the percentage of English Learners on track to proficiency from 7 to 55%.</p>]]></description>

When learning a new language, cross-linguistic transfer is most evident and critical, as those seeking to learn a new language apply what they already know in their first language to support their pursuit of developing high levels of oral language and literacy in the new language.</p><p>Silvia Dorta-Duque de Reyes presents practical research-based strategies that address universal literacy skills common to both the English and Spanish languages as well as language specific skills unique to each language.
