         <description><![CDATA[<div>This book is dedicated to "all the children adopted, the parents who loved them but could not keep them, and the parents who traveled far to find them."&nbsp; How are all members of the adoption triad represented in this book? <br><br>After reading this book and <em>Sweet Moon Baby: An Adoption Tale</em>, by Karen Henry Clark, students will create their own fairy tales telling the story of an adoption.&nbsp; Students will also submit a short commentary on their fairy tale, explaining the decisions they made in how they portrayed the adoption story.</div>]]></description>

How does the author's portrayal support or neglect the voices of each member of the adoption triad? Students will work together to revise the books (with attention to both the text and the illustrations) with the intention of giving voice to members of the triad not currently represented in the narrative.  </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>After viewing this movie, students will form small groups of 3-4 to engage in discussion using the following prompts:<br><br>-How does not having a family affect the main character?<br>-How does finding a family affect the main character?<br>-What does the adoptee hope to gain from finding a family?<br>-What does the adoptive family hope to gain from adopting a child?<br>-How does the adoption portrayed in this movie reflect the beliefs about and attitudes toward adoption during the era in which it is set?&nbsp; How does it defy society's expectations?&nbsp; <br><br>Groups will contribute their conclusions to posters dedicated to each question and arranged around the classroom.&nbsp; In carousel-style, groups will add their thoughts to each poster.&nbsp; When each movie has been viewed and analyzed (<em>Anne of Green Gables</em>, <em>Annie</em>, and <em>The Odd Life of Timothy Green</em>), the class's comments will be synthesized into a matrix comparing their analysis of each film and era.</div>]]></description>

Caldwell<br><br>Students will use double-entry journals to organize their thinking to prepare for literature circle discussions.&nbsp; As a group, literature circle members will create a poster depicting how adoption was portrayed in the book they read, how family and adoption was defined by the time period of the book, and how the characters viewed family and adoption.&nbsp; New groups will then be formed with members from each of the literature circles to share their posters and discuss similarities and differences in how adoption is portrayed in each novel.</div>]]></description>
