Bauhaus literally translated to “construction house “originated as a German school of the arts in the early 20th century. The school acted as a hub for Europe's most experimental creatives, with well-known artists like Josef Albers, Wassily Kandinsky, and Paul Klee offering their expertise as instructors. I personally think that The Bauhaus designs are straightforward and functional, made of simple, geometric shapes, clean lines, primary colours, and with little to no embellishment. Simplicity and minimalism. Bauhaus aesthetic is based on simplicity, clarity, balanced visual composition, rationality, and functionality. Walter Gropius now named as one of the greatest Architects of time, was the schools founders in 1919 and was inspired by Expressionist art and the work of architect Frank Lloyd Wright and designer William Morris. Under the leadership of Walter Gropius, the Bauhaus movement the defined differences between the applied and fine arts was ignored and the two styles where combined. Painting, architecture, metalworking, textile design, typography, furniture-making, stained glass, theatre design woodworking, these all found a place there. Gropius believed in bringing artists and craftspeople together was what would break the rules that were built around different art forms. The Bauhaus was built on a series of plans to try and improve the view of art.When thinking of Bauhaus, the primary colours blue, red, and yellow, as well as the basic shapes triangle, circle, square typically used at the institution. The teachers and students at the Bauhaus school dealt intensively with the relationships between shapes and colours. The exhibition of the Bauhaus was the first public presentation of the State Bauhaus, It took place from August 15 to September 30 in 1923 in Weimar and showed works created at the Bauhaus students Marianne Brandt was a German painter, sculptor, photographer, metalsmith, and designer who studied at the Bauhaus art school in Weimar and later became head of the Bauhaus Metal Workshop in Dessau in 1927. In 1908 after 4 semesters of studying architecture in Munich and berlin Gropius went to study under an architect called Peter Behrens. In 1910 he left the firm with an employee by the name of Adolf Meyer , they went on to design an shoe factory the (Fagus Werk) the glass curtain walls of this building demonstrated both the modernist principle that form reflects function and Gropius's concern with providing healthful conditions for the working class. . Gropius's early work focused on the design of single-family homes and public housing for the working class. He also served as an advisor on housing projects in Dessau and Berlin, and was involved in the construction of the German Embassy in Washington, D.C. In 1919, Gropius was appointed head of the Grand-Ducal Saxon School of Arts and Crafts in Weimar, which was later renamed the Bauhaus. While there, he developed a comprehensive curriculum that sought to combine craftsmanship with artistic expression. He also designed several iconic Bauhaus buildings, including the 1925 Dessau Bauhaus Building. In 1919, Walter Gropius was appointed director of the Grand-Ducal Saxon School of Arts and Crafts in Weimar, Germany. This school, which had been founded in 1896 was a combined school of crafts, design and fine arts. Gropius saw the potential of the school to transform the way in which design and architecture were taught, and he set about changing its focus from traditional crafts and arts to modernist design. He renamed the school the Bauhaus and set about creating a new curriculum that combined craftsmanship with artistic expression. Gropius’s vision for the Bauhaus was to create a school where artists, designers and architects could work together to develop a new type of modern designs that was free from the restraints of traditional art. He believed that traditional forms of art and architecture had become outdated, and that the Bauhaus could be a place to explore modern ideas and experiment with new forms of art and its expression. The Bauhaus teaching curriculum was based on the idea of ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’ (‘total work of art’). This was the concept of creating a complete work of art by combining the talents of artists, architects and designers. The school also sought to explore the relationship between art and technology, and students were encouraged to think about the potential of modern materials and industrial processes. Gropius’s vision for the Bauhaus was revolutionary and it quickly gained an international reputation. The layout of this piece shows throughout the whole image maximising the area and fitting the smaller elements into the larger geometric shapes. The use of space in this image allows for it to be coherent and draws your eye around the image making you look over every line, dot and circle. Having different geometric shapes spaced out in different directions and fitting into what would have been empty spaces brings the image together and make it flow into one. The uses of primary and secondary colours in the piece work together coherently and allows the secondary colours to act as shows making the image appear 3D. having the image mainly consist of geometric shapes and patterns in creates an abstract feel to it. For me as the audience I feel that the longer you look at the piece the more you can imagine the geometric shapes moving in a beating rhythm and the curved detail swaying back and forth.
