1952: Batista Takes Control

In 1952 the U.S.-backed, leader of Cuba, Fulgencio Batista overthrew the government to avoid losing power. Fidel Castro a lawyer at the time and tried to prevent the coup legally being the first of many failed coup attempts.

1953: The First Failed Coup

At the beginning of the revolution, Fidel Castro attempted an invasion of Cuba by attacking a barracks. Yet he and his group failed, being crushed by the Cuban military. This caused him and his brother to be sent to prison.

1955: Exile

While in exile the Castro brothers met up with other revolutionaries and began planning on how they would take back their country from Batista and the Americans.

1956: Failed Invasion and the Start of Guerrilla Warfare

The Revolutionaries first tried an invasion of the country but they were crushed by the military again. This time instead of giving up they pushed into the mountains to begin a new, tactic guerrilla warfare.

1957-1959: Success Begins

First, a group of students believing in the revolution attacked the president's mansion, leaving a handful of Batista supporters dead. After this, a counterattack was launched against the revolutionaries but they couldn't succeed. The revolutionaries kept pushing on to the north capturing towns and a train full of needed military supplies.

1959-1961: Castro Takes Power

Fidel Castro and his men took control of the government declaring that the movement was for socialism causing the U.S. to cut ties to Cuba.

1961: The Bay of Pigs

The U.S tried to regain its influence in Cuba by training Cuban exiles and having them invade the country at the Bay of Pig. The invasion began with a air raid which fail because, the bombers missed their targets leaving the Cuban’s air force intact which would later destroy the exiles escort ships and most of their air support. A day later over 20,000 Cuban troops were sent to the beach and crushed the invasion that day.

1962: The Cuban Missile Crisis

An American spy plane spotted the Soviets building nuclear missile silos in Cuba, in response the U.S. blockaded with the island hoping that no more resources could be brought into the country. Both sides knew how dangerous nuclear war would be so the Soviets removed the missiles from Cuba and the U.S. took its missiles out of Turkey.
