I don’t want any patient of mine to feel uncomfortable or scared to speak up.

Step 2- I would build this relationship by starting with the environment. i believe that putting out snacks and training my staff to be as welcoming as possible would be the way to create that comfortability and honesty. Not only this but I would also want to be a very engaging person in order to create that habit of sharing.

The comfort factor is so that the patient is willing to share their issues and not hold from disclosing any information that could be vital.

A good way to maintain a welcoming environment is to actually show that you care about the patient. An example of a question would be "What are your concerns", addressing the reason they came to a physician in the first place. It is an amazing start as no assumptions would be made and course of action would be determined by the patient themselves.

Rather than prioritizing professionalism, in its expense a lot more can be achieved, making it worth it. To foster a more personal relationship with patients, I think it would be worthwhile to offer off-site support, a number to text if they have minor concerns or if they think of questions later. Speaking of which, encouraging answers could help as well. Especially if they are keeping something in due to cultural reasons.

I would want to ask my patients questions little by little to get to know what they care about and what they need help with. This is in hopes that through this, they will slowly open up and reach out, whether it’s for medicine, alternative forms of care if it’s what they can afford, or even just to share something bad about their day. I also want to keep their background in mind, as culture plays a huge role in how a patient communicates, so I will make sure to make my patients comfortable by understanding differences cultures.

My plan to make sure I can establish this relationship is by making sure I practice gentle persistence. The power that gentle persistence can provide can be beneficial to both parties; the patient and the caregiver. Making sure to let your patient know that you care by getting to know them as a whole person instead of another case in the file can help them open up to you. This can also create an effective habit that allows the patient to be the one reaching out more often instead of the caregiver. The questions I ask should also be well thought out - overwhelming the patient with numerous questions can throw them off track with what they are dealing with. Instead, focusing on the quality of the questions and making sure they hit the right target that your patient is dealing with can help you get more valuable answers.
