On May 1st 1848,  the Swan set sail from Cork, Ireland. The ship carried victims of the Irish famine to a new life in North America. The passengers watched as Ireland disappeared on the horizon behind them. They were leaving their home forever but they were also leaving the horrors of the past few years. Fields lay black with rot, and relatives died of starvation and disease. Their trials were not over when they boarded the ship, however. Ahead stretched a dangerous voyage. On ships transporting these Irish citizens, Cholera and other diseases passed from one person to the next, infecting everyone and often killing up to one-third of the passengers. The newspapers of the time called the emigration ships « coffin ships » because of the high death rate aboard them. It was a single crop that started the problem, the crop on which the poor of Ireland were too dependent :the potato. Through generations, Irish parents and their grown children divided farms into smaller and smaller lots. Grain could not be grown on the small plots of land but potatoes could. Pool Irish families depended almost entirely on this plan for food and grew the same varieties year after year. When the plant virus known as the potato blight was accidentally introduced into the country in 1845, it spread quickly throughout the country. Year after year, the crops died. So did the Irish people. So many people died that their families could not buy coffins even if they had the money to do so. Entire families and whole villages were wiped out. It was the worst European famine in the 19th century. The famine changed Ireland in many ways. After the famine ended, farmers tried new methods and new crops to avoid the tragedy of the past. The Irish people varied their diet. They mourned the people they had lost through deaths and emigration to North America. In 1844 Ireland’s population was over 8 million people. By 1851, more than a million were dead and a million and a half more had emigrated to North America. The lowly potato had changed the country and its people forever.
