Ms. Julia: Coming from a Mexican Family

One injustice that I face in my Mexican culture is sexism. Sexism is normalized in the Mexican culture and allows for roles to be forcibly placed on men and women. Stereotypical roles are placed on women like cleaning, cooking, taking care of kids, basically being housewives and having to serve their husbands. Roles that are placed on men are bringing in the money, working manly jobs, being the man of the house, and always being in charge. These roles are what we would call outdated. They have been passed down by generations and families have adapted to them. It is up to new generations to stop this cycle and not have roles enforced onto their lives. People should be able to decide what roles they want to take in life and live happily without fearing of not fitting in with their cultural standards.
