Responding to the question of “What desired natural resources that we have covered throughout class could the spice in Dune represent?”

The spice melange is one of the most sought-after substances in the science fiction novel Dune” by Frank Herbert. It is said to grant extended life and increased awareness to its users. In this class, we have covered a number of natural resources that might be related to the spice in “Dune.” For example, oil could serve as a parallel for the spice in the novel. Oil and spice are two of the most finite resources in the world. Oil and spice have been at war and in conflict with each other for centuries. Gold could also serve as a parallel. Gold was prized for its rarity, beauty, and wealth. It was also a source of power and wealth. In South America, coca leaves are used to make cocaine. All in all, the spice can serve as a metaphor for humanity’s insatiable hunger for power and how far we’ll go to get it.

Responding to the question of “What comparisons to the religions we have covered in class can you make to the religions depicted in Dune on the planet of Arrakis?”

There are a few similarities between the religions depicted on Arrakis in Dune and the religions we studied in our class. The most obvious is the theme of prophecy. In Christianity, it is the second coming of Jesus Christ. In Islam, it is the Mahdi's return. Another similarity is the use of religion to justify political power. This is seen in the religious sisterhood of Dune. They use their spiritual beliefs to control the political world of Dune. In our class, we studied how religion justified political power throughout history. Overall, the religions depicted in Dune share many similarities with the religions we have studied in class, highlighting the role of religion in shaping human society and the way it is used to justify power and control.

Responding to the question of “What conflict over geographyt that we have covered in class could the conflict in Dune represent?”

The conflict shows in Dune reflects the familiar struggles over resources and territorial authority that we have previously discussed in class. Arrakis, the desert planet, serves as the only source of a valuable substance called spice, which can be compared to disputes over resources such as diamonds, oil, and other minerals. Additionally, Dune can be interpreted as a depiction of historical clashes between empires and native populations, similar to the colonization of the Americas and the subsequent battles between colonial powers and indigenous peoples.
