Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by infection with the Neisseria gonorrhea bacterium. It infects the mucous membranes of the reproductive tract, including the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes in women and the urethra in women and men. Woman usually have no symptoms, but may have pain with sex, vaginal discharge and lower abdominal pain. Men may have no symptoms or discharge from penis, discharge from anus, pain in testicles or pain urinating. If it is untreated during pregnancy it can lead to miscarriages, premature birth and low birth weight or premature rupture of membranes. In women, gonorrhea can spread to the reproductive organs and cause pelvic inflammatory disease. This is estimated to occur in 10 to 20% of cases of untreated gonorrhea. Gonorrhea can be treated by a single dose of 500 mg of intramuscular ceftriaxone. Gonorrhea can be prevented by using condoms, limiting number of sex partners, getting tested for sexually transmitted infections and not having sex with someone who have a sexually transmitted infection.
