How to apply the strategies (given by the speaker) in ESP context

After watching the video, I have gained some insights on what to do when teaching in ESP classes, especially in using corpus. An activity that I can apply in my classroom is vocabulary activity. This activity will enhance the learners' vocabulary as it may provide more instances of the words with the real context.
In the teaching and learning of a second language (L2) or foreign language (FL), vocabulary is an essential

component of all comprehension (Folse, 2010). Whether in real-world tasks such as asking for travel information

or in academic tasks such as textbook reading, vocabulary is essential for the success of language learners.

Teachers in content-area classes (such as introduction to psychology and introduction to chemistry) frequently

teach content-specific vocabulary but are not aware of the challenges that L2 and FL learners encounter because

they do not know the specialized vocabulary or the basic words surrounding the content-specific vocabulary. Thus, by using corpus in language classes, I think learners will be exposed to the natural language of the specific fields.
I like the idea of using Gap Filling exercise or KWIC gap activity. I personally feel that by administering this activity to the learners, the learners will be able to notice the patterns of the sentences and also they will be able to be aware of the different functions of words.

1) A KWIC (key word in context) gap activity. KWIC presents different word classes such as nouns, verbs, adjectives. Students can identify the functions and patterns of the sentence.

2) Specialized vocabulary. The main barrier in proficiency within a discipline is the lack of vocabulary, specifically the lack of exposure towards specialized vocabulary. Understanding specialized vocabulary can help students identify unfamiliar words and word senses.

Example words in tourism glossary:

· Benchmarking: Process of comparing performance and activities among similar organizations either against an agreed standard or against those that are recognized as being among the best

· Benchmarks: Points of reference or comparison, which may include standards, critical success factors, indicators, metrics.

Source: https://www.gdrc.org/uem/eco-tour/t-glossary.html
