Nurturing Equity requires getting to know the clientele...the students in your classroom, in the building and the families and communities that surround them. Since "culture" is the product of family, neighborhood, community and regional histories, this combination of influences on how a student perceives themselves and the world is complex. Realistically, we can't become intimately familiar with that much detail; HOWEVER, that does not excuse us from trying to understand what expectations and needs students have coming into the classroom and how those match or do not match the goals we have for them. Our relationship and instructional goals, if focused on closing the gap between student understandings and our educational goals, can help narrow the equity gaps in education.

As much as possible, I organise my classroom to provide as much flexible seating as possible. For example, I offer student work areas for students who prefer to work solo, students who work best in pairs and students who work in groups and providing work areas to work sitting and standing. I provide acceptable "break" opportunities for students who need to self regulate... taking the battle out of issues like hall passes, comfort needs etc.

My students whine that I actually grade work vs. grading "just for completion." How am I teaching my students to be successful in the real world, if I am not holding them to high expectations. In the real world, a job would just fire them. We can become equitable by holding them to high standards. I come from a large district in STL, it's been a wakeup call for some of my students, as they are not used to such high expectations. My class is very rigorous and I am not going to lower my expectations. I am being equitable by holding all students to these expectations. I go above and beyond. Equity doesn't mean providing the same resources or strategies for all students. In order to close the gap, we have to meet students where they are at academically and help them build a solid foundation so that they can eventually get to the higher-level questioning/reasoning skills.

How can we have equity in this district when the have's get everything and the have not's get the most barebones education possible. We built an entire new school for only the top 5 percent of students in our district. The rest of the schools are left with oversized classroom, fewer teachers and adult 🤬, and students with a large variety of needs. Even within our school we have segregated out the smartest kids and put them on one team with small class sizes so they get more individualized attention. Meanwhile, the students who need the most help and attention get stuck in rooms with a ratio of 28 to 1, and very little education happens, it is more classroom management. The students who need the most help get the least help. If you stop and think about it, the lowest tier students are the ones we should be pulling out of classrooms and putting into a different program where they can get their needs met on a more individual basis. The 5 percenters get pushed further because they get a better education than the lower 30 percent. This opens their lives to more opportunities once they leave our school. It would take a radical shift in thinking to make any changes.

Equity in the classroom can also be viewed in the area of types of learners. As a new teacher I find it hard to keep things equitable with the various types of learners in one classroom setting. Visual learners learn different than auditory or kinesthetic learners and having to come up with a lesson plan that supports all is difficult in order to keep things equitable on how the students learn as we can't separate the types of learners and just have classes were you just have one type of learner in the class. In all my years teaching, PD attendance and educational courses in college this is one point I'd love to get feedback on.

The truth is that I am unsure of what our larger community impact is at the moment. I know that our kids go on to college at a rate the exceeds other demographically similar schools. I know that regardless of circumstance we expect our kids to succeed; while acknowledging that success takes on many forms. I know that we fight to the point of exhaustion to provide the tools and materials that make our kids competitive in a future job market; even though our material resources fall far short of other schools in the region. I know that you have teachers who continually go above and beyond to mitigate outside circumstances while never giving in to them as excuses. We fight for our kids because they deserve the best possible education and anything less would be unforgivable. If that's not equity, then clearly I do not know what it is.

In one classroom, they have in-class instruction from one teacher, get on the Google classroom for the 2nd, and then use MobyMax to get a 3rd access point into the material. Many students have taken that a step further and are now doing their own research for resources.
We have also implemented the use of the workshop model to provide more chances to access the material through different types of activities.
The last piece is to make every student understand that they are skillful and to help build their self-esteem and through that, their grit.
