These experiences bring an understanding of the immigration and refugee experience, loss and resilience, dealing with illness and death, and family problems that I can relate to with my students. I teach learning to sing and play instruments as a discipline and as a process. In the elementary school, I let students know that all their attempts to make music are acceptable and good. And I let them know that if they can't play all of it (the piece of music), then they can play some of it.
