The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956, popularly known as the National Interstate and Defense Highway Act, was enacted on June 29, 1956, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the bill into law. The bill created a 41,000-mile “National System of Interstate and Defense Highways” that would eliminate unsafe roads, inefficient routes, traffic jams and all of the other things that got in the way of speedy, safe transcontinental travel. Highway advocates argued, in case of atomic attack on our key cities, the road would permit quick evacuation of target areas.

Built after World War II for returning veterans and their new families. Production was modeled in an assembly line manner and thousands of similar or identical homes were produced easily and quickly, allowing rapid recovery of costs. Houses came standard with a white picket fence, greener grasses and great appliances. Sales of the original Levittown began in March 1947, and 1,400 homes were purchased within the first three hours.
