The Civil Rights Movement in the United States, which gained momentum during the 1950s and 1960s, aimed to end racial segregation, secure voting rights, and achieve social and economic equality for African Americans. Key objectives included the dismantling of discriminatory Jim Crow laws in the South, securing the right to vote for black Americans, and ensuring equal access to education, public facilities, and employment. Activists sought to challenge systemic racism that denied African Americans basic human rights and opportunities.

To achieve these goals, the movement employed a variety of nonviolent methods. Key strategies included peaceful protests, such as sit-ins at segregated lunch counters, boycotts like the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and marches, most famously the March on Washington in 1963. These protests were complemented by legal challenges and lobbying for legislative changes. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, and others led the movement with a commitment to nonviolent civil disobedience, inspired by figures like Mahatma Gandhi.

The movement led to significant legislative victories, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which outlawed segregation in public places and banned employment discrimination, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which protected African Americans' right to vote. The movement also shifted the national consciousness, inspiring future social justice efforts. Despite these gains, the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968 highlighted the ongoing struggles, but the movement’s success in dismantling institutionalized racism marked a turning point in American history.
