Since Jem retrieved his pants from the Radley Place, he is in a bad and silent mood.

Scout starts second grade, which she finds no better than first grade.

One afternoon on their way home, Jem tells Scout what happened when he went back to the Radley House: he found his pants folded and mended.

When they pass by the knothole tree, they see a ball of twine resting inside it. Scout thinks it is someone's hiding spot, so they resolve to see if it’s still there after a few days. On the third day Jem takes it, and from then they considered everything found in the knothole their property.

A few months later, the knothole holds two figures carved out of soap that resemble Scout and Jem. They both suggest it could be Mr Avery or Miss Stephanie Crawford’s sweetheart, but Jem faintly suspects it could be Boo Radley.

Over the weeks they find a pack of chewing gum, a spelling bee medal, and a broken pocket watch. As a thank you, Scout and Jem decide to write a letter to their secret benefactor. But the next day, they find that the knothole has been filled with cement.

As Mr Radley is passing, Jem asks why. Mr. Nathan says that the ‘Tree's dying’ and that ‘you plug them with cement when they’re sick.’ pg 69.

Jem asks Atticus his opinion. Atticus says it looks healthy to him, but Mr. Radley ‘knows more about his trees than we do.’ pg 70.

Jem stands outside until nightfall, and when he comes in, Scout can see he had been crying.

However, when Jem cries at the end of the chapter, and from this we can tell that he is affected by Mr Radley and what he was trying to achieve in separating the children from Boo Radley. In this situation we can see a likeness to Mae Mobley, and her reaction when she was separated from Aibeleen because of her mother.

These presents and stories are a symbol of growing friendship, as Scout and Jem can only contact Boo through the knothole; and Skeeter can only talk and get to know Aibeleen and Minny through their stories shared in the safety of their home, the only oppurtunity to become friends outside of the community's racist opinions.

Chapter five is a short chapter that focuses on how Scout's relationships with those around her are beginning to change. The start of the chapter sees Scout continue to struggle with Jem and Dill rejecting her because of her gender. She feels very alienated from them as they don't allow her to play with them any more, so goes and seeks other company. This she finds in Miss Maudie, a widowed neighbour with a kind heart and excellent baking skills. The chapter details some of their conversations together and gives us a bit of an insight into the friendly relationship they have. Later on Jem and Dill hatch a scheme to communicate with Arthur (Boo) Radley, by writing him a note and delivering it on the end of a fishing pole through the Radley houses' window. Scout stumbles upon the two plotting in the garden and together they go to deliver the note. Scout is very reluctant, but goes along with the plan anyway. In the end they are unable to deliver the note as the are caught by Atticus and instructed firmly to leave poor Boo alone.

Chapters four to seven, and seven in particular, involve the theme youth and innocence. This chapter begins with Scout starting second grade. Jen learns his lesson from Boo when he finds his pants folded and mended: Boo is not a monster. The knothole is their communication, and Jem wants to give thanks through their message. However, Jem is starting to grow up, and realises the tragedy of his efforts at communication becoming blocked. Scout is still too young to realise who had been giving them gifts.

This theme is not explored as much in The Help, except for the scenes of Skeeter growing up with the guidance of Constantine. Growing up, Skeeter also struggled with fitting the ideal feminine picture like Scout, pressured to be 'Miss South Carolina' like her mother.

For Scout and her brother Jem, a year of school is coming to a close. As Scout is walking home from school, she sprints past Mr Radley’s house out of fear of Boo Radley. However, she as she is running Scout notices a bit on tin foil in the knothole in one of Mr Radley’s oak trees. Scout gathers up the courage to take it out; finding two pieces of gum to her surprise. She takes this home, tests if it is poisonous by licking it, and once confirmed that it isn’t decides to eat a piece for herself. Once Jem finds this out, he is outraged and makes her spit it out and then wash her mouth.

On the last day of school, both Jem and Scout find Indian head pennies in the oak tree. Jem decides to keep the pennies until school comes back around for them, so they are able to ask if someone has lost them.

As it is summer, it means Dill returns to Maycomb. Jem, Scout and him all join in on games together again. The first game they decide to play is one which involves someone climbing into a large tyre (which was Scout) and rolling down the street until stopped. Jem and Dill continuously push Scout down the street until she is too fast, and in the end stops right outside of Boo’s house. Scout too dizzy to realise; Jem comes to her rescue and making her run away before something bad happens. Jem is made to receive the tyre from the front of his yard.

Too scared to play again, Jem comes up with a new game called ‘Boo Radley’. As the summer progresses, so does their game, becoming more complex and turning more into a play. Atticus catches them playing the game, and although suspicious, does not specifically ban them from playing the game since it isn’t completely clear to him if it involves Boo Radley or not.

Atticus is just one of the reasons Scout wants to stop playing them game. Scout also believes that as she landed in front of Mr Radley’s steps, she heard “another sound, so low [she] could not have heard it from the sidewalk.” Scout believes “someone inside the house was laughing.”

Even though this isn’t anything to do with racism, it can be related back to the Help much like when it is heard one of the maids has stolen a priceless object from their employers, they completely reject and fear them; determining them as outcasts almost in the white community. These events are significant as they symbolise how rumours can emphasise the way a community as a whole looks at that specific person without actually knowing them.

When Jem is a very protective figure, making Scout spit out the gum in case if it is harmful to her. “Spit that out right now!” pg. 37. There is a prejudice in young children that they grow up with a lot of rumours around them, Jem has more exposure to Boo Radley and the lies based around what he is like, so therefore he thinks the gum is bad, which influences Scout. In the help the white kids are raised by black people although end up as they grow older hating and despising black people as that is how they are brought up. Society has a bigger affect on kids than what is realised which can influence their thoughts whilst growing up in this environment around them.

As in other chapters there are obvious parallels in the setting. Both the Help and To Kill a Mocking Bird are set in the 'deep south' of the US. One obvious contrast between the two is that Maycomb seems to be almost like more of a friendly community, with Scout, Jem and Dill being allowed free reign of Miss Maudie's yard. In the Help the white people seem to be more solitary, and in any case their estates were too big to allow children to be able to play in the neighbours yard.

In this chapter one recurring theme seems to be gender. Scout doesn't really identify with her fellow females and lives in constant fear of being called a girl by her brother. In the Help Skeeter also struggles with the idea of femininity and doesn't identify with the other women in her neighbourhood. Another theme prevalent in chapter five is the idea of the fear of the unknown. Scout is petrified of 'Boo' Radley because he is shrouded in mystery. Similarly in the Help, the white community misunderstands and mistreats the black community because their ways and culture were outside of their tunnel like understanding of the world around them.

Miss Maudie: Miss Maudie is a sweet character, with a flair for baking. It is this gift she has for making cakes that slots in so nicely with the women in the Help. Pies and cakes are used like offering in the Help, and see, to somehow represent the relationship between people. This follows along with Miss Maudie in To Kill a Mockingbird, as she is constantly baking Jem, Dill and Scout cakes to show her fondness for them. Furthermore, though most of the white women in the Help don't even come close to having a fiery personality like Miss Maudie's one can see a faint likeness between Miss Maudie and Celia. Both are relative outsiders in the community as they don'y fit in properly with others of their social standing and gender, but both are genuinely good at heart.

Stephanie Crawford: Though Stephanie is only mentioned in the chapter, some of her alleged behaviours parallel to the gossiping, rumour spreading women in the Help. Miss Maudie mentioned that the awful rumours about Arthur Radley that had been circulating were fabricated by 3/4 coloured people and 1/4 Stephanie Crawford. If this was true, she would fit in very well in the Help.

Chapter Overview

In chapter six of To Kill a Mockingbird, after spending the day at his aunt’s fishing
pond, Dill suggests going on a walk with Jem and Scout. The two, a little
suspicious of the idea, are hesitant to go, but eventually do so. Upon reaching
the house, “Dill and Jem were simply going to peep in the window with the loose shutter to see if they could get a look at Boo Radley”. However, “... [Scout] saw [a]
shadow. It was the shadow of a man with a hat on... The shadow, crisp and
toast, moved across the porch towards Jem.” In the chaos, Scout trips and Jem loses his pants. The trio hear a loud noise, like a gunshot, and realises that they are being shot
at. Upon arriving home, they notice all of their neighbours gathered around the
Radley’s house. Miss Maudie tells them that Mr. Radley had been shooting at a “Negro” in his yard. Upon noticing Jem’s lack of pants, everyone asks about it and get told that they were playing with matches. Everyone then heads off to bed, giving Jem the perfect opportunity to collect his pants. He later returns with his pants, easing Scout’s worry that he may be shot. The children’s innocent night trip almost turned into a disaster, as Jem later realised that they “shouldn’a done that”.

When Mr. Radley suggests that he shot at a Negro, he is implying that white people would not be snooping around his backyard, as that is suspicious behaviour. This same treatment towards black people is seen in The Help, when a campaign is started to introduce different toilets for them. This can be seen as a recurring theme of prejudice.

Violence is a theme seen in To Kill a Mockingbird, as Mr. Radley wildly shoots at the
intruder in his backyard, as well as when Tom Robinson is murdered. The theme
of violence is also seen in The Help when Leroy beats Minny. Political violence
is also shown through poorly executed court cases for black people in both
productions.

Set in the Southern States of the US, just as The Help, there are many similarities between the two. This extends beyond the dependence on black people to help raise their children and clean their homes, as well as the belief of white people that “think that coloured folks are not as good as whites.” They also have their differences, such as The Help being set in the 1960’s with a historical background of the Civil Rights Movement and To Kill a Mockingbird being set in the 1930’s, during the Depression.

As Jem, Scout and Dill are only children who are very naive and innocent, they are not alike many in The Help. However, Mr. Radley, as well as many of the other neighbours are similar to those in The Help. This is due to their racist remarks and behaviour. Calpurnia is much like many of the black maids in The Help, as they all share the same profession due to the colour of their skin.

Mr. Radley's instant suspicion of a black person could be related to when rumors were spread of a black maid stealing a priceless item from one of the employers. Jem's regret for having visited the Radley's could be seen as similar to the regret that Minny felt after putting her own feces in the pie she then fed to her previous employer, as they both knew this would cause trouble.
