Agree : Recycling is a start of a good practise

As we know, recycling is a good start to good practice as it helps our environment in so many different ways. It saves natural resources, energy, clean air, and water, landfill spaces, money and also creates jobs. (COMMON KNOWLEDGE)

This good practice can begin anywhere- be it in school, home or at work. For example, my aunt has been practicing this since young. She will dispose the recycable food packaging such as styrofoam box and plastic cups into the recycling bins. ( ANECDOTE)

Between 1990 and 2012, EU consumption of products packed in glass increased by 39% in Europe. Glass recycling increased at much quicker pace of 131%. ( STATISTICAL DATA)

Researchers found that good house keeping practices in industries can reduce 30% of waste and therby 30% of cost of waste management. For this reason, we believe that recycling is a start to good practice.

Agree : Recycling has so many benefits

I agree that people should be fined for not recycling because recycling has so many benefits. As everyone knows, in Singapore, recycling is encouraged everywhere. In schools, by charity organisations who leave flyers at your doorsteps, at the community centers and even around HDB flats where they place recycling bins around. (COMMON KNOWLEDGE)

For example, my mum will always go all out to contribute every time a recycling flyers comes by our doorstep. It is her way to hep in every way that she can for recycling. Even our things at home such as toilet rolls and tissue boxes are being recycled and being put at the recycling bins nearby when it is full. ( ANECDOTE )

It is said that recycling helps the economy. In an online website, ' Benefits-of-Recycling ', it is said that $20 million could be saved per year if everyone has the recycling habit in them. In another website, ' all-recycling-facts.com ' it is being sad that recycling also helps to reduce expenditure in many ways.

References :

" Benefits-of-Recycling " Available online at

http://www.benefits-of-recycling.com/recyclingbenefits/ ( data accessed : 29/03/2015 )

http://www.benefits-of-recycling.com/whyisrecyclingimportant/ ( data accessed : 29/03/015 )

" all-recycling-facts.com " Available online at

http://www.all-recycling-facts.com/recycling-benefits.html ( data accessed : 29/03/2015)

Disagree : Recycling or not does not make a difference

I disagree that people should be fined for not recycling because we all can see that recycling only happens when people feel like contributing or when there are specific events regarding recycling happens. We also do not see the effects recycling do on to us or our planet. ( COMMON KNOWLEDGE )

For example, Singapore is till not 100% litter free regardless in schools or in public. Teenagers and even adults still do leave litters around. We also still have cleaners all around sweeping and picking up litter that other people leave behind. ( ANECDOTES )

From an online website " popular social science " Professor Bjorn Lomborg stated that recycling is only often just a feel-good gesture that provides little environment benefit at a significant cost. ( QUOTATION FROM EXPERTS )

From another online website, " listverse.com ", it has also listed 10 ways of how recycling hurts the environment

References

" Popular Social Science " Available online at

http://www.popularsocialscience.com/2012/11/01/why-recycling-does-not-work-2/ ( data accessed : 30/03/2015 )

" listverse " Available at

http://listverse.com/2013/01/27/10-ways-recycling-hurts-the-environment/ ( data accessed : 30/03/2015 )

Disagree : Some people have yet to understand the importance of recycling

As we all know, there are many good reasons for adding recycling to our daily routine, ranging from a personal level to a global advantage that some have yet to understand. Research suggests that people do not feel it is necessary to recycle by reduing package waste ( COMMON KNOWLEDGE )

For example, my friend prefers to just dispose recycable items into the normal bins as he is lazy to find recycling bins that is not commonly found. ( ANECDOTE )

During the summer of 2012, a survey given out by an intern at school and Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education ( SCARCE ) shows that most of the respondents either sometimes ( 8% ) or rarely ( 7% ) recycles Common Recycables. ( STATISTICAL DATA )

Researches found that laziness is the main barrier why poeple have yet to understand the importance of recycling.
