No, the passing of the Espionage and Sedition Acts by Wilson were not justified. Despite some opposition to the war, the frequency of this opposition was insignificant compared to it's support. In addition, the institution of propaganda further persuaded US citizens to join the support for the war. Although it could be argued that these acts reduced the frequency of spies, while to a small extent true, no spy would vocally spread anti-war propaganda in the press and most persecuted by this act had no significant malicious power or intent over the US. Therefore,
the Sedition Act as an amendment to the Espionage Act was unnecessary. Furthermore, the Act was unconstitutional and violated the rights of free speech and press.

The Espionage Act seems like a justified attempt to remove spies for foreign powers from America. Meanwhile, the Sedition Act was a clear violation of First Amendment rights, and was an overreaction. Additionally, the Sedition Act, along with the American propaganda effort, broke with the principles that America was founded upon.

The and Sedition Act that was passed by Congress was a direct violation of the U.S. Constitution, specifically the 1st Amendment. Despite this the justifications could be seen as valid to the many Americans who wanted to support Nationalism of the United States in this war. The Espionage Act was significantly more constitutional and also helped to benefit nationalism and the war efforts.

Yes, the passing of these acts was justified. It heavily eliminated the presence of spies that could be assisting enemies of the U.S. Though it goes against the right of free speech, this could be seen as a "shouting fire" situation; people who voiced their beliefs could truly have had ill intent toward the U.S. in support of other countries.

The passing of the Espionage and Sedition Acts were not both justified. While it was probably a beneficial move to witch-hunt international spies, the Sedition Act was basically watered-down censorship, and close to if not easily violating the first amendment. Even if it would be ruled constitutional, the act still would be forcing, rather than persuading Americans to always be pro-war.

Query: Was the Sedition Act meant to be used in conjunction with the Espionage Act to forcibly uncover spies? And if so, did they expect espionage agents to openly spout anti-war politics?
