3.What genre is the book? Why is this important to know?

"Man's Search For Meaning" is listed in the Psychology genre. A reason why the genre is important to know is that it gives the reader insight into what the book will deal with. Psychology is about mental situations, and emotions, so books classified in the psychology genre would deal with those kinds of subject matters. It is also important to know, so a person knows where to look for it in a bookstore. "Man's Search For Meaning" talks about the mental emotions that the people imprisoned in the camps went through, and discusses how they got through it and coped psychologically.

11.What are some tips for reading and understanding the book?

Some reading skills that I used while reading this book was:

Taking lots of notes on Post-Its. You can see I have a lot of them in my picture. I would write down my thoughts on that page, important ideas, quotes I liked.

Another skill is breaking up the reading over a few days. It was a hard read because of the subject but also the vocabulary and how it was written, so I had to read a few pages each day and process it before I could understand the big picture.

Another tip I used was looking up any word I did not understand and then rewriting the sentence with synonyms so I could understand the message better.

There are two main ways in which the author, Viktor Frankl, provides hope for the entire world.
1) He tells us that we, humans beings, are much more powerful than we and science think. He puts as an example the challenging experience of being an prisoner in the concentration camps. Most of us would not believe ourselves of being capable to endure that level of stress and life conditions, but he assures that we are capable of that and more.
2) Frankl suggests that there is hope in those people on which we do not expect anything positive, any kind gesture or warm words.
The way in which he illustrates this is by mentioning some "small" gestures of kindness that some people with high positions in the concentrations camps had toward him. For example, when a foreman secretly gave him a piece of bread.

Viktor Frankl elicits empathy in the readers through many detailed examples of the different kind of situations that his companions and him lived in the concentration camps. Situations full of struggle, tears, and injustices. But behind that constant fight for their lives was the one specific hope, strong or weak, of hugging someone one more time or to simply being free as they used to be and always should have been.

The way in which Viktor Frankl invites us to see life struggles is with an "captain" or "pilot" posture. He tell us that we always have the choice of acting according to what we consider important to us, remembering our reasons (loved ones and personal goals) to keep giving our best in each challenging situation. He also mentions that our surroundings should not limit us but that they can be a source of personal development if we choose it to be in that way.

A crucial moment in the book is when Viktor Frankl changes his mind about escaping from the concentration camp to stay with his patients. This decision that he made is very surprising and admirable. However, the most important is that he was still able to make his own choices, to keep his integrity no matter what could be the price for that. He realized that his life and probably death needed to have a meaning. He was determined to be worthy of his sufferings, acting according to what he believed was the best for his inner well-being.
