Look Both Ways by Jason Reynolds is a series of short stories. Mainly on the topic of growing up more specifically as a middle schooler. Focusing on the struggles and friendships you might face as you go through middle school. What I took out of the stories we read was that resilience is one of the key skills you need as you face challenges.

In this book and the stories we read i found some good examples of resilience. The first one being the "Water Booger Bears". One of the main characters named Jasmine is fighting through a disease called Anemia, She has always had the disease just this year "she had experienced worse attack"(8). As said in the book. She had missed a month of school at this point but she just kept pushing through with the help of her best friend TJ. Showing the resilience aspect that i was talking about. She had to face the hardship of catching back up but also face everyone asking questions even if they never talked to her before now. She has that resilience needed to keep coming back after hardships. Another example is the story "The Low Cuts" a group of kids stealing change. There hardship focuses on them not having a lot of money and there parents have cancer. A quote I took from the low cuts was,"Not the cancer but the strain it put on everyone"(22). I thought this quote told us about resilience, these kids had to fight through the reality that there parents had cancer and they didn't always have money for what they wanted so they learned the skill of resilience.

The book "The Water Booger Bears" has two characters TJ and Jasmine. These two were friends since kindergarten. This year was different when they started Jasmine did not she was out a month due to her Anemia having one of her worst attacks. She said," Her muscles felt like they'd became wood and imagined her bones as splinter"(9). When she came back that was a struggle having to meet with people to try to catch up on all the work she missed. It wasn't easy to keep her mind off it either people she never talked to before were coming up to her and asking questions. The thing is she had to fight through it showing resilience through everything she is going through she kept going she still is in pain but TJ never left her side besides classes they didn't have together carrying her back pack because like I said she still is fighting through some of the pain. Thats where I would say she showed she had the skill of resilience.

In "The Low-Cuts" there is character named Bit and I like one of the Quotes about him. "Bit was half the size of his friends but was the biggest when it came to confidence"(23). Bit is a someone that might be small but he didn't let that stop him. In the group he is known as the leader. Bit is showing resilience knowing his mom has cancer and he does not have a lot of money he is in the same boat as everyone else but he has the confidence he needs to get through it. Him and his group of friends steal change and in this story they did it to buy old candy and then Bit had the confidence to go sell it to people he probably shouldn't have been talking to but he was doing all of this for his mom.

Look Both Ways shows thing relevant to what is going on now. One of the key things focused in the story was resilience. I believe that to get through hardships and obstacles in life you have to have some kind of resilience. When you face troubles like as a student athlete myself you have to get through challenges all the time from injuries to even grades it that resilience you need to keep going finding the balance you need. Keeping the grades up and being willing to fail is a big thing. Keeping a positive perspective when you are hurt and when you get back having the resilience to get back out there and work twice as hard to get back where you need to be. This is why you need resilience to get through life.
