Ayrika Hall
A gap in my research lies between statistics and personal experience. While my research can provide me with ample information about exact demographics--neighborhoods that the main populous of the AIC comes from and percentages to how that number changes over time, this information excludes a key factor: personal experience. Field research and interviews grant me insight into one of he most important aspects of a museum-its cultural impact. Cultural impact is not something that can be accurately portrayed in statistics and annual reports, it is a factor that must be measured on an individual level. I want to know if the language of the AIC's collection is one that can be understood cross-culturally. I want to know if their collection is connecting with the diverse and evolving cultural make up of Chicago. While my research has provided me numbers, I want to know feelings. Understanding how the AIC connects with people on a personal level is crucial in understanding their role as a cultural and educational center.

Using digitized research methods is very helpful to me. Using key words allows to me to seek out information relevant to my topic and to the area im studying. However, I think this can possibly be limiting the viewpoints I get because I can be exact in my research method. It eliminates vagueness and irrelevant information, but perhaps some of this information could actually be interesting and relevant.

In Prologue section, I have already explained how I am related to the Chinatown in Chicago. Chicago Chinatown is a popular place for not only Chinese ethnic groups, but also for many non-Chinese ethnic groups around the city. The multiculturalism behind this popularity is intriguing to me, an international student form Wuhan, China. In my further exploration of the Chinatown, I will use the question“what makes Chinatown a welcoming place” to guide my research.

Literature Review Method

It is always necessary to check what other researchers did before start my research. I uses the DePaul Library’s online search as a primary approach of searching source of reference. The databases reached through the approach including EBSCOhost and ProQuest Central. The keyword I used for searching including Chinatown, Chicago, immigrant and Language. Many source I found valuable to me were related to Chinatown in Washington DC, and unluckily, there are much less usable source for Chicago Chinatown than I expected.

Benjy Reiff

During this annotated bibliography I have learned how big Israel Independence Day is in Chicago and how important it is to the Jewish communities in the Chicago land area. Israel is the homeland of the Jewish people and many more religions as well. Israel’s birthday is celebrated all over the world but I have learned that Chicago not only has massive celebrations, ceremonies, parades, concerts and much more, but I learned Chicago holds a long lasting relationship with Israel and maybe that why Israel’s birthday has such a big role in Chicago. Being Jewish and from Chicago, and living in Israel, I knew there were celebrations here and there around Israel’s birthday, but I never knew how important it was in every community in Chicago. Israel was celebrated from the north suburbs to Lakeview, all the way to the south and west sides of Chicago with all different types of events celebrating Israel's Independence. Israel has a huge role in Chicago and I now know that there is no other city in the United States that represents Israel on a larger scale, especially on Israel’s Independence Day. One of the founders of Israel lived on the west side of Chicago in the Lawndale area for part of her life, her name was Golda Mier. This may be another reasoning for the massive celebrations in Chicago for Israel's birthday.

Digication – Digication is an e-portfolio that allows you to save and store all of your word documents in one digitized cloud online.
I have explained the relationship between my research question and prologue on Annotated Bibliography. My research question has positioned the problem on the whole of the United States, but my exploration area can only be confined to Chicago. Although the scope is not large, but itit is still can representative and well illustrated something that I try to explore. It is a pity that the resources of DePaul University liberty are limited. That's one of the reasons why we employ one/two research activities for data collection on the site like observations, note taking, interviewing and photo-making. Before I do this, I will think about the questions I want to ask in advance. And I may spend the whole afternoon asking and interviewing different people, it is worth it. My RQ is: what do foreigners think of Chinese food and Chinese food? There must be positive and negative comments. It's like I like pizza and hamburgers very much, but the food is really oily. So I'm going to interview these ideas. Digication is a website that allows students post work in response to teacher’s assignment. I also feel that this is more like a personal web page, which can categorize and uploaded its own writing works. So it is very revealing of personal style through background image and changes the colors. I have been doing Digication for two quarter. Besides, I think there is no other use at all I think. And the operation of this site is very tedious. My computer stocked two times in class today which made me very irritable. At the end of last quarter's final Digication thatI didn't have the press the "publish" button but I press the “Submit” button, which made me have no grade at the end of the final. It's just makes me feel sucks honesty.

  Research Gap

So unfortunately, I mean it is very hard to find a good resource about Chicago Chinatown, so the connections between my research questions and resources are limited very much. What I can do is that i found lots of essays talking about other places Chinatowns which is similar with Chicago Chinatown. Chinatown have been existed here for a very long time. Although Chinatown have a very long history but in my perspective that long history obviously doesn't help a lot in language learning or accent adjustifition. Maybe many people never see the backside of the Chinatown, cuz most of those servers are trained to be able to say English to native speakers here. But there are still many people in Chinatown can’t or barely speak English.

  Statement of Purpose

I don’t have much word to say about the digication website because I have never use that before. What i know about it so far, is the things i learned today, it is a website which could publish your assignment and reflection your teacher something. Personally, i think is more like a web, a web you post your things and everybody in Depaul can give you something as responds or suggestions.

What I have discovered in my annotated bibliography was that there are many different points of views and ways of looking at my research question. For example what is it that really tells the story of the music, is it the music, the food, the workers. All in combination of all the articles I had read, I was able to find a new focus point for my question. The five senses of a human are what tell a story of the restaurant. The gap that I have determined between literature and my fieldwork is that visuals and being there help to get involved so much more than reading. Without going and doing the fieldwork, I would not be able to notice the five senses and what are the reasons that I keep returning to one particular restaurant.Who is going to benefit from my research are people who are intrigued and keep going back to the same restaurant. The reason people return is because of a well told story. No matter if one thinks of it as deep of a way as my research question, it still determines the reasons why they keep returning to their favorite restaurant. Digication is a platform that allows one to post their work. The digital mode changes my perception of research because it is not in your face to touch feel or really see. There is a sense of mood that is lost. Having a digital perception only gives one point of view that is the same for everyone. The audience see’s digital versions the same way allowing no one to interpret the research in a different way. Also the structure of research in a digital mode creates a one sided viewpoint because it is how one has chosen to design their research. It show that they want their audience to see the research they have done in a certain way. As for the purpose of having digital research, it allows people from all over the world to view your work and ideas. Even people outside of your class who may not have the opinions as you, because a class is usually formed of people facing a similar goal. Overall, posting online allows feedback from almost anyone, giving you a broader perspective on your research.- Breeanna Schmidt

Research Gap

While completing fieldwork and an annotated bibliography for my research question, I have learned that the gap between the two is how I searched for context. While out in Pilsen, I was looking for abstract art to portray my chosen landscape. While doing research, I was looking for meaning behind the artwork I did in Pilsen. I was able to find the murals in Pilsen by encircling around town and looking for many crowded places. On the other hand, I was able to find sources for my annotated bibliography by using credible databases which led me to scholarly and credible articles. My research is beneficial to students who are in progress of a similar to research topic. My images captured from Pilsen are very abstract and detailed and my sources gathered information provides a good example for how students find credible sources.

Statement of Purpose

Digication is a resource for displaying my projects and research into a single unit.

(Research Gap)

I have discovered a lot throughout the reserach process in this class. I learned new ways of researching and exploring ideas. I learned you can take pictures for research, interview, and take notes or observe. I noticed that all the ideas or revelance to sources all connects to your main reserach question in an annotated bibliography. Although, was difficult to find online sources related to my own research question. I’d say the gap in my research was the fact that none of the sources were able to give me the research about the history of the church and the structure and art outside of it. The signage was not included as much and what the statues or art within the property represented. The art has to do with language as well and how it attracts the community. I discovered art and the structure of the church plays a major role in its neighborhood. I believe the people who come to this church would benefit from my research or people who may want to come to this church.

(Statement of Purpose) -Your questions

Digication is an online source to put or exemplify your work or projects.

Research gap

One of my main discoveries was that not only does Chicago incorporate cultural communities into its city but cultural communities heavily adapt to the place they are in as well as different countries now adapt to American culture. When I started my research my main focus was on how cultural communities adapt to being in a place with mostly English speaking natives and signage catering to English speakers. While this is still heavily my focus, I am now also diving into the opposite, how cultural communities choose to incorporate English. Some places being familiar with this language offer more opportunities or higher social status or is required for the community to stay afloat by attracting tourists. The gap in this situation is I guess why can these cultural communities not stand alone, why can’t they just have there own space and preferred language and signage. Who I am hoping will benefit most from my research are the different cultural communities, I hope to shed light on their importance.

Statement of purpose

Digication is a online source to make yourself a e-portfolio.

The gap that I found in my research was a lack of information from the perspective of the general population. Most of what I found was incredibly formal and looked at the community as though it was a place that was just meant to be studied. I want to look at the neighborhood through a more emotional and empathetic lens. Since most of the sources that I found talked about statistics, and hard facts, I think that a lot can be found if I look into the Linguistic landscape and struggles of residents with more heart. I think that my research can shed light on the use of language in the community and the issues that it may cause for residents. I believe that this research would also benefit people on the outside looking into Little Village who are trying to understand it better. People cannot really understand the feelings in a community from reading figures and statistics. My question is all about how the neighborhood is perceived by people outside of the community, and my perception can lend another perspective to answer it.
Digication in an online portfolio tool that allows a person to present their writing in a professional way to a wider audience. Its format is usually easy to use and you can quickly create a collection of writing. This tool can be used to share work and connect with teachers, peers, and potential employers. I have used Digication for two writing classes so far at DePaul, and while it was a little strange to get used to it has proved to be a useful resource. The digital format of the website allows for a quick, clear, and instant way to upload content.

Research Gap

While researching in the neighborhood of Pilsen a god that I found is that I take on a role of an outsider while looking at the problem of gentrification. I share no connection with the neighborhood because I am from an entirely different state, therefore I don’t have any personal knowledge of the issue. While it is important to take an unbiased stance when writing the paper, I feel that it is imperative that I try to delve deeper into the emotions of the residents of Pilsen. Their stories aren’t always heard, and they can give great insight on the cultural changes that are currently taking place in the neighborhood. To create a better connection I believe that I must interview a number of residents of the area to hear their different stories of the cultural changes and how it has effected their daily lives. While Pilsen only serves and a research topic to me, I have to remember that for a lot of people it is their home and it is currently under attack.

Statement of purpose

Digication serves as an online portfolio for writing that people can showcase to whoever they would like. Using digication will allow me to not only present my research paper about the effects of migration on the cultural landscape of Pilsen, but also share other forms of media that will better portray the issue of gentrification. For example, without digication I would not be able to have my paper and videos and pictures of Pilsen accessable at the same time

The articles I searched from online databases are not directly related to my RQ, which is how public space in Chicago Chinatown making it a welcoming space. Specifically, there are 3 articles provide information of Chinatown’s demography, culture identity and early history; 2 articles provide how commercialization and gentrification was happen in Washington DC’s Chinatown. It is hard to find one that hit on my RQ. During my fieldtrips, I tried to capture as much picture and notes of experience in Chicago Chinatown’s public space. I think I still need to figure out how these literature help me shape my answer to RQ. My research will probably help Chinatown gain more popularity by figuring out what is attracting visitors and what is not. It will benefit local people by knowing how we can improve the Chinatown environment, raise the quality of Chinatown public space.

Statement of purpose

The digication is a half-open space for publishing works.

Research Gap
Walking around DePaul Loop campus and the wider Chicagoland area in general has made me take notice of many things as a foreigner on a student visa. From my fieldwork research trips, Chicago had a very wide landscape and retained much of its buildings and structures from its history in the 19th, 20th, and 21st century. The art museum for example, just two blocks off of Jackson boulevard by the DePaul campus in the Loop is over 125 years old. Since 1893, thousands of millions of travelers visit the Art Institute of Chicago each year. I don't share much of a connection with the art as an Financial Services major. But I did share a connection in a way that the past sociocultural events/influences by others have led to these fascinating pieces created by artists. My research question was initially going to be about the features of American identity developed, maintained, and displayed throughout Chicago. The creativity in the art museum would play a big role in supporting the name of America the beautiful. But I decided to bring it, a bit back down to earth, relating it sort of to my prologue topic of Hong Kong and its urban visualizations. I wanted to talk more about the features of urban planning (or referred to as urban development) as seen in cities across the globe. Urban identities, features, similarities, and differences about what it means to go live in a city.
Statement of Purpose
Back home in Hong Kong, what it means to live in a fast-paced, unforgiving, and ambitious city means to be a capable and strong individual who is quick-witted, abrasive, and assertive in the public space. The Digication platform serves as a good tool for me to put in writing my words and ideas. It also allows me to display my thoughts, conceptions, and words into an online record with pictures and videos. I will be able share my thoughts and ideas onto an online space that lets others read and comment on my writing. It's nice to be able to have people read your writing and them share their opinions on open forums.
