After experiences in the War of 1812 that led to a deeper religious belief, William Miller became an avid member of the Baptist Church, becoming focused on the Second Coming of Christ. Eventually, he broke away from the Baptist Church, and predicted the end of days. After it failed to come to pass, he instructed followers to live every day as if it was their last.

Forced American Christianity to examine its assumptions and more clearly define its beliefs. A new belief emerged that God worked through human being and their churches to progressively bring on the millennium. Served as a marker for the church to go in the direction of focusing on writing the wrongs in society. The message of Christ's second coming has been trivialized by the Millerism's failure to get the message exactly right. The Millerites failed in their goals because there never was a second coming of Christ. The belief system is continued by the Seventh Day Adventist Church and its members.
