York was inherited by Clark after the elder Clark had died. He was a man that had gone on the trip and while on it he was given more freedom than most slaves were given. He asked Clark after the journey if he could be freed but Clark said, “I did wish to do well by him. But as he got Such a notion about freedom and his eminence Services...I do not think with him, that his Services has been So great/or my Situation would permit me to liberate him.” In 1815 he was freed and given a wagon and a team of horses, which made him start a hauling business. In 1832 Clark told Washington Irving that York died in Tennessee from cholera.

Lewis enlisted in the army in 1794 and became captain in 1800. He became friends with a commanding officer, William Clark. In 1801 he became Jefferson's personal secretary when he was president. He studied astronomy, botany, surveying and mathematics, medicine, and anatomy. Upon their return jefferson appointed lewis as governor of the louisiana territory. Lewis had difficulty in this post, which included personality conflicts and questions about how government money was being spent. He began drinking more heavily, and his relationship with Jefferson became increasingly strained. In 1809 Lewis decided to travel to Washington DC to plead his case in front of the new administration. On October 11, 1809, while staying in a Tennessee inn along the Natchez Trace Parkway, Meriwether Lewis shot himself, taking his own life.

Mock orange, Philadelphus lewisii start with a red stem that fade to gray with age. This flower was named after lewis during the expedition and also made the state flower of idaho. It has a very orangey scent making it attractive to humans and bees alike. After the petals fall, the sepals remain in a way that makes it like a second, different type of flower.

Grizzly Bears are majestic symbols of the wild. They are an umbrella species meaning that when we protect them and their habitat we also protect many species. They have claws and a hump which helps with there exceptional hunting ability. They are omnivores and also have such a good nose they can smell food from a mile away. These bears are not very territorial and they can be seen eating with other bears.

The Nez Perce Indians lived in scattered villages in the Plains west of the Rocky Mountains. About 4,000 in number, they were excellent horsemen and owned the largest horse herd on the continent. They fished for salmon along the Clearwater and Snake rivers, and harvested camas plants in mountain meadows. Every year, Nez Perce hunters would cross over the difficult Bitterroot Mountains and hunt buffalo. By late September 1805, the Corps of Discovery had completed the same grueling passage by following the Lolo Trail used by the Nez Perce. That month, three young Nez Perce boys spotted Captain William Clark and a few men approaching the cluster of Nez Perce lodges. The Indians told Clark about the route ahead. Among those offering guidance was Twisted Hair, a chief that Clark described as “a Cheerful man with apparent sincerity.” On the Corps’ return journey in May 1806, they returned to the lodges of the Nez Perce to reclaim their horses and prepare to cross the mountains. While there, Lewis and Clark engaged in a diplomatic exchange with Nez Perce chiefs. The captains sought to establish trading posts and inter tribal peace in the region. The Nez Perce were willing to cooperate as long as the Corps provided guns and other weaponry to the Nez Perce.
