DV8 - To Be Straight With You

We watched a clip of DV8's and concentrated on the special awareness of

their performances. We also looked at the key points.

Below there is a link to one of the scenes we analysed. These are my interpretations.

- Drawing pictures of what the man is vocalising. it physically paints a picture for the audience, there isn't much left for the imagination because there ios so much going on.

- 'Inclination' written on the board shows he is being who he wants to be.

- the man has drawn and devil and an angel, this could represent the subconscious mind telling him what's right and wrong.

- the man draws on him when he is being "personal" which guides the audience to him opening up.

Complexity of belonging

We then watched this video from a theatre company called Chunky Moves.

I couldn't notify as much on this one because there is so much going on but what I've got from it is it is VERY physical. The performers all work together to create a very un-naturalistic image, for example a 1 minute 14 in the clip there is a News Reporter and the performers are working all together to create that scene. They use chairs, television screens, cameras and camera men, originally a very natural scene. there Is a lot of layering in this clip, there is so much story being told through the body rather then just the clip itself. There is a real vascularity to the clip.

Physical Exercise 1.

We was given a task two work in pairs and we was given a stimulus to have a 'walker' and a 'stopper' at first we was being dragged around by the 'Walker's' by holding their arms which didn't really work and didn't stop them from 'Walking'. Jill then told us to then ACTUALLY stop the walker from walking, so we went from a really poor excuse of stopping someone, to using all our bodies strength to physically stop them from even making a step forward. We then performed in turns and took turns to watch each other. Our outlook was that it looked quite comical lying on the floor holding someone's legs to stop them. We then added sound into the mix and the sound was a speech from Theresa May - which was a political speech. When then went on to perform it too each other again. This gave it a complete different meaning.

Physical Exercise 2.

We was split up into 3 groups (Me, Chantel, Kayleigh and

Cameron). We was given a magazine and we had to pick a paragraph which took our interest. We took a sentence from an interview with actress Naomie Harris. The line we pointed out was 'Harris is complicated like a fish'. Our key word was 'Complicated'. We started with five chairs facing away from the middle, we then all span our chairs round to face the front ion cannon. (We incorporated chairs as inspiration from DV8 To Be Straight With You chair sequence) we then mimed out emotions of which 'Naomie' was feeling and as it was 'Complicated' we made her have very mixed emotions, one minute she's confident the next she's so upset she needed to pick her self up. Chantel, Kayleigh and Cameron) all mimed an emotion whilst I stayed sat and I voiced the subconscious mind. E.g. Kayleigh mimed feeling confident so check herself out in the mirror whilst I stayed sat and vocalised "I'm really loving this dress, I look great! I cant wait!!" and then they took it in turns. I then started at one end and walked down five of the chairs very confidentially. Once I got to the fifth chair I realised there was nowhere else to go. I was then frustrated and hesitant, whilst the others dragged and slammed chairs down aggressively and I have to reach and stand onto the next chair. This represented the complication. Whilst this was going on Kayleigh was reading out the whole article, and by the time she finished i have come of the chair and realised I was surrounded in a tight circle of chairs and I spoke the line "Complicated like a Fish."

Chapter 1 - Prepare the body

key points and exercises from this chapter

- Actor needs to be sensitive to every part of the body therefore must be supple, flexible and intact. "sensitivity begets precision and stage movement requires definite clarity"

- Actors need to create a natural everyday body position without tensing when performing "where actors learn to create a fixed axis with their hips, thereby creating tension between the upper and lower points of the body which distorts the daily or normal balance position."

- "undoing the structure in order to study and analyse them and raise awareness of how the body works" this is great as well because if 1. you are familiar with your own structure and posture and 2. so when you embody different characters you are in tact with how to position your body.

- " imagining you are being watched by an audience produces a kind of split-awareness, but in addition the body learns something when it thinks it is being observed" Yoshi Oida 1997. this an actor to prepare stage presence which is of course important.

- "One does not work on the body or the voice. One works on the energy" Barba 1991

- Grotwoski's troupes thoughts on yoga "they found it fruitful in creating a supple spinal column, endowing confidence and enhancing special awareness. But then they found the kind of concentration produced was introverted and destroyed expression"

- Mask Neutre, Jus Houben graduate of Le Coqs school.

refers to masks as 'A human without personality, someone with no history and no future.. it is kind of a place where everybody is and nobody is.'

On the signal they all pass their sticks clockwise through the left hand to their right hand and onto the next person. there should be a seamless flow of sticks around the circle. On a signal change direction too anti-clockwise. the aim is to focus on each other and having a sustainable matching energy between them.

EXERCISE - Lift The Arm

Lift an arm to shoulders height. Return arm. Lift the arm again at a different speed, try accelerating and decelerating at the start and finish of the movement. See if you can begin quickly and slow to halt, and vice versa. Now, try the other arm and see if it is difficult achieving the movement on this side?

Let the other arm rise as if pulled by a string, and fall as if string has been cut. Then imagine the arm is balancing a cushion as you lift and when returning as if you are pushing something to the ground. Doing the exercise with your eyes closed allows your concentration to turn inwards whilst your sensory awareness turns outwards. we will experience internal muscular activity, whilst simultaneity cultivating an 'outside eye' i.e. working out how your body image appears to an observer.
