He didn't want to start the war, however he knew that by sending the supplies, the confederates would fire first. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Charles Sumner was a senator from the North who strongly hated slavery. He gave a speech called “The Crime Against Kansas,” where he blamed Southern leaders for supporting slavery. A few days later, a Southern congressman named Preston Brooks got angry and attacked Sumner with a cane in the Senate, badly hurting him. This shocked the country and made the fight between the North and South even worse. Sumner became a hero in the North for standing up against slavery.</p><p><br></p>]]></description>
