In 1983 a truck with thousands of pounds of explosives ran into a building holding American Military Personnel. 

This killed 243 Americans. 

Reagan withdrew the remaining Marines in 1984. 

One of the greatest problems in the early 80s was the heavy use of illegal drugs 

Cocaine was the leading drug 

Call for harsher punishments on drug dealers 

Reagan sent Army and Navy to stop smuggling route in South Florida

This worked. The smuggling shifted to the Mexico border. 

AIDS is the last stage of HIV

By 1994 AIDS had killed more than 240,000 Americans. 

Reagan was criticized for not doing enough.  

Bush sent 20,000 soldiers and Marines into Panama 

The purpose was the overthrow General Noriega  and arrest him for Drug Trafficking 

Some Latin American Countries hated this act because they said it was American Imperialism. 

Americans and Some in Panama loved it because a dictator who was smuggling drugs was removed. 

Saddam Hussein the dictator of Iraq had accrued tons of war debt in their constant battle with Iran. 

This left them looking for money and they claimed that Kuwait a small bordering country who was rich in oil actually belonged to Iraq. 

On August 2, 1990 Iraq invaded Kuwait. 

Once they took Kuwait they headed to Saudi Arabia where 1/2 of the world’s oil reserve is.  $$$$$$$$$$$$

With the support of Congress President Bush Launched Operation Desert Storm ( The Persian Gulf War) 

In just a little over a month The United States had helped free Kuwait from Iraq and the grips of Saddam Hussein. 

Clinton branded himself as a “NEW DEMOCRAT”

Gave states more control over welfare compared to the federal government having full control. 

Required recipients to work within two years of receiving aid. 

Placed a lifetime limit of 5 years paid for by federal fund

Enforced Child Support payments

Reduced the deficit 

Had three years of surplus ( 1998-2001)

NORTH AMERICAN FREE TRADE AGREEMENT 

Kenneth Star was a special prosecutor  appointed to look into money given by the Clinton’s to a real estate company called Whitewater. 

He investigated 7 years and found nothing on the Clinton’s guilt. 

However, he did uncover Clinton’s relationship with a White House Intern. 

Clinton lied twice under oath that he had not had an affair with Monica Lewinsky 

Clinton admitted he lied. 

Kenneth Star recommended impeachment. 

First African American President

Created an Economic Stimulus package to try and help and spiraling economy. It was called the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. 

Provide affordable Health Care for Everyone. - Affordable Care Act 

Bring troops home from Iraq- By 2011 troops were withdrawn - Focus turned to Afghanistan where Taliban was overthrown 

2011 Osama Bin Laden was captured and killed during a raid. 

Hillary Clinton- Secretary of State 

Sonia Sotomayor- First Latina Supreme Court Justice. Two Puerto Rican Parents. Grew up in Bronx, New York in housing projects. Attended Princeton and Yale.  

Colin Powell- Bush’s Secretary of State- First black person to serve in this role. 

Condoleezza Rice-  First female African American Secretary of State - Second woman and second African American to hold that position. She was also Bush’s National Security Advisor in his first term. She was the first woman to hold this position. 

First Priority- Find the People Responsible 

This was the first step on the “War on Terror”

Afghanistan Taliban Government allowed training camps for the AL-Qaeda terror cells. 

The United States demanded Afghanistan turn over Bin Laden.  

They refused. 

America with the Help of Britain overthrew the Taliban.  

Captured Many Al- Qaeda members but Bin Laden Escaped.
