Are there any specific techniques or routines we could use during the osteopathic appointment to aid with the psychological issues associated with the disorder? Thanks, Becky

Hi becky, as osteopaths we have to work within our remit so we have to be careful with what we do in regards to advice for the patient, in my opinion someone suffering with a eating disorder the best thing to do would be to try and release tension throughout the body to better improve their vitality, which in turn will hopefully improve their psychological state

How does Bulimia potentially lead to Heart attacks? Thanks, Kate

Hi Kate thank you for your question. From what I understand it is because patients with eating disorders can develop atrophied hearts as a result of low blood volume and deficits in the balance of energy prolonged exposure like this can lead to cardiac arrest.

Q: You mentioned the low back pain can be caused by the "strain in the body" caused by frequent vomiting. thus, is the low back pain caused by a referred pain from the gastrointestinal tract or by musculosketal dysfunction due to the recurrent exertion?
My answer to this would be due to the fact that their is such an imbalance in the gastrointestinal tract due to the repeated vomitting this causes strain throughout and hence causing a referred pain in the lower back

Q: You mentioned patients with bulimia might seek professional help, are they usually directed to a certain type of therapy in particuliar? (Alienor)
A: There are a lot of eating disorder organisations and psychotherapist based options which suffers can contact, the route they take depends on what they want so for example they could either follow a program which they may sign up for through an organisation or may seek one to one help via a therapist.
