No doubt certain actions that sports personalities do might negatively influence young people, leading them to blindly follow sport personalities that they look up to. However, it has to be acknowledged that sports personalities have certain qualities that young people can learn from. For one thing, sports personalities are hardworking and they are willing to be disciplined in order to reach their goals. Most of them, especially famous pro-athletes, have vigorous training regimes that requires a lot of effort and determination. For example, famous football player Cristiano Ronaldo has intensive trainings everyday and he follows a strict diet in order to be in his best performance. He has an intrinsic motivation and desire for excellence that will aspire young people to set goals and persevere in their endeavours. Coco Gauff, a young rising tennis player who recently clinched victory in the 2023 US Open Women’s Singles, has also displayed a strong sense of discipline which can be seen from her intensive training. In essence, sports personalities have a strong character which aspires young people to be as determined as they are.

8. To what extent are festivals and national holidays effective in promoting unity in your society?

There is no doubt that the people in our society would rather go on vacations on long holidays, and this therefore decreases the effectiveness of festivals and national holidays in promoting unity in Singapore due to most people not attending these celebrations. However, it has to be acknowledged that festivals and holidays in Singapore are still effective in promoting unity amongst people during national holidays due to the annual celebrations that we have, which strengthens the common identity of the people regardless of where they are. With the advancement of technology, people can easily access parades or festival shows broadcasted online, where they are able to witness how the festivals and national holidays are being celebrated in their home country even when they are away from home. For example, MediaCorp has been broadcasting the National Day Parade online since 2013, according to Channel News Asia. This allows Singaporeans who are overseas to watch the National Day Parade (NDP) and be immersed in the festive mood, and celebrate the independence of Singapore concurrently with their fellow Sinagporeans back in Singapore. The easy access of the show encourages Singaporeans who are overseas to watch NDP. This helps strengthen a stronger sense of national identity and pride within Singaporeans regardless of where they are. Therefore, this allows all Singaporeans to feel united. Hence, festivals and national holidays are in fact effective in promoting unity in my society to a large extent.

Consider the view that spending money on space travel cannot be justified in today’s world

While it is understandable that spending money on space travel can possibly yield substantial long term benefits (solutions to greener energy sources), it may be more realistic to spend this money on present problems like combating poverty. Given that not everyone will benefit from the result of space exploration, we should focus on the economically challenged people, who are unlikely to enjoy the luxury of the benefits. In other words, instead of spending so much money on space travel, we should redirect these funds towards helping the poor. In 2022, China spent more than 10 billion US dollars on space programs, while still having people who lack the ability to make a living. In my opinion, we should better spend this money to ensure the survival of people before advancing into the unknown. In short, space travel generally cannot be justified in today’s world given that this money can be used for the benefits of the poor people who may be in desperate need of it at this point. When there are still people struggling to support themselves in the present times, spending extremely large sums of money on space travel is not justifiable today.
