    • Ryley -By the time he was three years old, both of Poe’s parents had died, leaving him in the care of his godfather, John Allan, a wealthy tobacco merchant. After attending school in England, Poe entered the University of Virginia (UVA) in 1826. After fighting with Allan over his heavy gambling debts, he was forced to leave UVA after only eight months. Poe then served two years in the U.S. Army and won an appointment to West Point.
      Poe began to sell short stories to magazines at around this time, and, in 1835, he became the editor of the Southern Literary Messenger in Richmond,
    •  Over the next ten years, Poe would edit a number of literary journals including the Burton’s Gentleman’s Magazine and Graham’s Magazine in Philadelphia and the Broadway Journal in New York City. 
    • He published some of his best-known stories and poems, including “The Fall of the House of Usher," “The Tell-Tale Heart," “The Murders in the Rue Morgue," and “The Raven.”

He grew up in Baltimore, and later on married his 13 year old cousin. In 1847, Virginia, Poe's wife and cousin, died of tuberculosis at the age of 24. This is the same age his mother and brother died, which was why he barely knew his parents. Afterward, his life became troublesome mentally and financially till he died. Poe died on October 7, 1849 in Baltimore, at age 40. People don't really know the cause for his death, but alcoholism may be one reason.
    (HAYLEY) Academic: Poe received special tutoring to gain early entrance into the new University of Virginia. Poe was elected to the Jefferson Literary and debating society on June 17, 1826 and once served as its Secretary pro team.
