In early childhood young children are just beginning too see their individual identities in the faces looking back at them and in the words used to guide them. I think it is important for ECE educators to gain insight and understanding from the minds and heart of individuals who experience being miss identified by society. The more we can expose ourselves the better.

Picture books are helpful teaching tools for giving educators language. Often times it is the not knowing what to say or how to respond that leads educators to deny/ignore teachable moments. I like this book because it outlines possible responses that teachers can share with children in moments where they are commenting on other children's choices of expression.

I love this so much! I am going to ask my teenage boys to watch, just for the exposure of new thoughts and understandings about people, possibly friends they know and individuals they encounter. Why does it matter to us when we look at someone whether or not we can identify their gender? This video evoked that perplexing thought deeply within me and allowed me to see my own biases.
There is a difference between knowing something and feeling something, this video made me feel and that is where true change occurs.

It is not just good practice to include books that display gender neutrality, acceptance and identity. It also and equally important to scan all books for depictions that stereotype in obvious ways. This short video helps to guide teachers on noticing stereotypes in classic books that they may otherwise not have noticed.
