After the 7 Years War Britain wanted to get money from the colonies, to cover the war costs and pay the maintainance of the army (that protected colonies). In 1765 Parliament imposed the Stamp Act on the colonies, every printed material had to have a stamp showing that a tax was paid to Britain. That was repealed in 1766, because of opposition and violence.
Then the Colonies organized the First Continental Congress (Philadelphia, September 1774), members urged the colonists to take up arms and organize militias.
But a fight between colonists and the British Army just started at April 1775 in Massachusetts, then the Second Continental Congress happened and there was created the Continental Army, commanded by George Washington.
On July 4, 1776 that same congress approved the Declaration of Independence (written by Thomas Jefferson) and the American Revolution had just begun.
