         <title>Gold rush /January 24, (1848-1852)</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>Description: </strong>it started in 1848 by a man (John Sutter)that was building a water power sawmill and in a cutter they found some gold. They tried to keep it secret but word got out and 4,000 gold miners ran to the land of California, Coloma </p><p><strong>Cause/Effect: C</strong>- a man found gold who worked for John Sutter and spread the word. <strong>E-</strong> more then 300,000 people came to coloma and ran the gold dry.</p><p><strong>Perspective: </strong>John Sutter when building the sawmill in 1848 he went bankrupt in 1852 because people trespassed and destroyed his property and left with all of his profit.</p><p><strong>Connection: </strong>The gold rush greatly boosted the U.S. economy, trade and creating opportunities for businesses selling goods and services to miners.&nbsp;</p>]]></description>

         <title>Compromise of 1850 (1845-1850)</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>Description: </strong>In 1845 When James K. Polk became president and he was set on to make the U.S. bigger as the first act of his presidency. So he started with California entering the union as a free state and the south was not happy. </p><p><strong>Cause/Effect:C-</strong>making California<strong> </strong>a free state stopped the expiation of slavery for the south and but in exchange Columbia got a new fugitive slave law.<strong> E-</strong> it was a law that didn't care if Africans was free or not in the law then it brought chaos to the north and had to be stopped.</p><p><strong>Perspective: </strong>free African Americans were taken from their homes and put in court but they went to the south to trial them and all they had to say was they were a fugitive and now their back to a slave.</p><p> <strong>Connection: </strong>The Compromise of 1850 was key in delaying the start of the Civil War until 1861.</p>]]></description>

         <title>Pottawatomie Massacre May 24 (1856-1858)</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>Description: </strong>John brown started the massacre with his 5 sons and his step-son. They killed 5 pro-slavery men that night but left one boy the third son 16-year-old John Doyle of the first family he killed.</p><p><strong>Cause/Effect: C-</strong> <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://civilwaronthewesternborder.org/encyclopedia/pottawatomie-massacre">the radical abolitionist John Brown, five of his sons, and three other associates murdered five pro-slavery men at three different cabins along the banks of Pottawatomie Creek</a>.  <strong>E- </strong>In 1879 john brown friend testified that john was the one who started the massacre and lead it with his bare hands.</p><p><strong>Perspective: </strong>John Doyle watched his family get killed right in front of him and was left in the woods not to far from his house.</p><p><strong>Connection:</strong><a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://civilwaronthewesternborder.org/encyclopedia/geary-john-w">John Geary, had largely restored order in the territory, although violence flared up regularly until 1858 and periodically after that. The Pottawatomie Massacre and the other attacks that marked “Bleeding Kansas”.</a></p>]]></description>

         <title>Raid on Harpers Ferry (October 16, 1859-October 17, 1859)</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>Description: </strong>John and hes team stormed Harpers ferry on the 16th and then john was captured the 17th and executed.</p><p><strong>Cause/Effect:</strong> <strong>C-</strong> john brown stormed a navy base and wanted to take it away and their weapons. <strong>E-</strong> the navy showed and being trained they took back the navy base in less then a day and send john to be executed.</p><p><strong>Perspective: </strong>navy team<strong> </strong>had just heard the a crazy man just took over a base and killing people and they show up and kick him out in less then 12 hours and have him killed.</p><p><strong>Connection: </strong>it had significantly changed the tension to the american civil war<strong>.</strong></p>]]></description>

         <title>Election of 1860</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Description: in the election of 1860 there were 3 democratic people running for president and in the republic was one man   Abraham Lincoln and in the running the score was Lincoln has 180 votes, Breckinridge totaled 72, Bell scored 39 and Douglas had just 12.&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Cause/Effect: C-</strong>president Lincoln was the only republican and there were 3 democrats. <strong>E-</strong> all the southern votes were divided by 3 people and no one was close to betting the republican northerners.</p><p><strong>Perspective: the southerners </strong>had the votes to win the presidency but when the see how votes they will see how many northerners voted for Abraham Lincoln.</p><p><strong>Connection: </strong>the civil war was about to begin after the election of Abe Lincoln.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>Description: </strong>the 3 day fight was the bloodiest of the civil war and it was also helped are side the most too and with almost 50,000 casualties.</p><p><strong>Cause/Effect:  C- t</strong>he hard fight the union prevailed and marked the turning point for the war.<strong> E-</strong>the Confederates lost and had nothing to do but leave or die </p><p><strong>Perspective:</strong>Confederate general Robert E. Lee rushed the north to end the civil war in a swift motion but ultimately failed.</p><p><strong>Connection: </strong>After a year of defensive victories in Virginia.</p>]]></description>

         <title>Freedmen’s Bureau   (March 3, 1865-1872)</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>Description: </strong>the Freedman bureau was made for the representation of property for ex-slaves so they can be self-sufficient for the future.</p><p><strong>Cause/Effect: C-</strong> with the 13th amendment setting slaves free even in the south the people still hate them so the need to live in a good place to thrive. <strong>E- </strong>the union made the freedman's bureau to take unowned land pass it on to Ex-slaves so they can survive on their own and the bureau had to watch ex-slave owners.</p><p><strong>Perspective:</strong> Ex-slaves being set free and the moved and given land to live and actually be free.</p><p><strong>Connection:</strong> It establishes schools, purchases land, located family members, and legalized marriage between black and white and others.</p>]]></description>
