The board game Käferalarm (“Beetle Alert”) was developed as an innovative educational project at an agricultural school to raise awareness among young people about local forestry and ecological relationships. The idea emerged after Storm Vaia in 2018, which caused severe forest damage and led to a rise in storm-damaged timber and bark beetle infestations. The direct impact on students and the wider community sparked great interest in forest health and insect ecology.

Käferalarm addresses these issues and playfully teaches about beetle species, habitats, threats, and conservation. The game was developed collaboratively with students and follows the principles of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). It has already been used in four schools—two agricultural, two general education—with 280 students, plus several external participants.

We’re currently working to make the game widely available in schools. For production, we’ve partnered with the social enterprise “Schindel & Holz” in Lienz, obtained a quote, and submitted the project to several sustainability award competitions. In addition, tutorials are planned to help explain gameplay and related topics.

Our goal: to inspire as many people as possible and encourage a deeper appreciation for nature. Maybe one day we’ll look back and say—we created a game everyone knows, just like Monopoly.
