It feels like the start of 2nd quarter was just yesterday yet today is the end of it. Learning new things in between these two periods, especially in science is how I pass my time. During the first until third week of the second quarter, we explored the topic of earthquakes, we discussed about the types of faults, and the different parts of a fault, a topic that I’ve never touched before. On weeks 4 and 5 it’s all about Typhoons, the first topic that caught my attention is the difference of a typhoon, hurricane and cyclone, turns out the only difference between them is their location. It was also mentioned that there are now 5 typhoon categories instead of 4, the teacher also discussed about thunderstorms, the parts of a typhoon, and the paths in which typhoons take. The last week was all about the minor celestial bodies, namely the comets, asteroids, and meteoroids. First thing we learned is the difference between a meteor, meteorite, and meteoroid, which was pretty easy to understand. The teacher also informed us about the Oort cloud and Kuiper Belt, a concept that I had no idea of. Although it is only few, I still learned a considerable amount of knowledge this second quarter.


 In my most honest way of speaking, I haven’t the slightest idea on how can I apply the things I’ve learned during the second quarter to my everyday life. Unless my future choice of career will be something related to the things I have learned, I have no idea how to apply them. Although that may not be true to all of them. I have also learned about what to do during, before and after an earthquake, something that is absolutely helpful if there is an earthquake. Although god forbid there be an earthquake in my hometown, it is still helpful. There is also about the categories of a typhoon, learning these can be helpful in case there is a typhoon occurring, knowing what you can do and not do during a certain typhoon category is definitely helpful.  The last thing that I thought of in applying the things I learned, is correcting the misconceptions that other people have on that topic. Other than these 3 I have no idea on how to apply the things I’ve learned, although I’m certain that there are other ways I do not know, I’ll just discover them along the way.


Although I am a firm believer of not planning very far in the future, there are still a few things I would like to learn. I would like to learn about theoretical situations, like what would happen if the Earth’s core slowly stopped spinning? The outcomes of these theoretical situations and would these outcomes happen are one of the things I would like to learn. Another thing that I am very curious about is if they can predict the formation of a typhoon. And if they can how do they do it? The last thing I am curious about, although it may seem like a stupid question, is how do they know how the tectonic or oceanic plates move? It bothers me that they somewhat know in which direction a plate moves, is it by using a SONAR-like device?
