The development of the oil business means that the country is rich in resources and it also contributes to the reduction of unemployment in the country. Especially in a country like Nigeria, where more than 50% of the population is made up of young people, the employment rate is inevitably low in many cases. However, as with any country that is developing economically, there are always disadvantages. For example, oil leaks can contaminate other resources such as water and land. These negative effects also have a significant impact on the health and livelihood of the local population. Another consequence is the breakdown of human relations, as people fight over the crude oil. However, in the short term, this crude oil business is contributing greatly to the Nigerian economy and will temporarily allow Nigeria to continue its development. On the other hand, is this a continuous and sustainable economic development? Resources are never permanent. There will come a time when they will be exhausted. And when that time comes, this country, which has relied on the oil business to support 48% of its economy, will be left with huge unemployment and cut off from its source of income. Other resources will also become useless by that time, and the country may degenerate from a developing country to a least developed country.

Based on the above, I think that this crude oil business may not be a good one because it is not a sustainable business and the country is facing a high risk of bankruptcy in the near future if it cannot do this business.

It is a problem when the share of oil declines because it is still essential for Nigerias exports and it is nearly the only product Nigeria can export and earn money with. So for the people in charge and for the government  the export of oil has got positive effects. Initially, a strong oil industrie leads to a decrease of unemployment rate but it just offers a great potential in the short term and it does not provide enough opportunities for the future.

A negative aspect is that oil production is not a sustainable job for the workers because people might lose their jobs when production decreases.
Furthermore, oil production affects people and nature in a negative way. Oil is often a reason for water polllutions in the Niger Delta through oil leaks, for example. The consequences are that the people do not have enough water, especially drinking water. It is very harmful for the local population because they do not have enought water ressources and the danger is that they die of thirst. Additionally, it is also a big burden for the nature because the water pollution could also have negative effects on animals living in the rivers and the shores.

A very important aspect is that oil production is the reason for conflicts between Nigeria´s ethnic groups living in the area for the control of this lucrative industry. This competition has led to violence between ethnic groups and the presence of the Nigerian military, as well as ethnic militia groups in the oil-rich regions. The relationship between these ethnic groups are very tense.

All in all, I think that oil production was very important for Nigeria´s image in the world and the development of the country. But, as descriped, there are also very important negative aspects. Furthermore, the chances of a revival of Nigeria´s oil Industry are very low. Due to climate change the worldwide importance of crude oil is expected to decrease in the future and new sources of energy are getting more and more relevant.

All that will be left behind is the impoverished society that has not been helped in a sustainable way. The companies only think of their own profits and thus only exploit the workers and the country. Therefore, oil production is not sustainable and rather a danger.
Another argument in favour of oil production in Nigeria is that the oil companies invest in social infrastructure as well as in the transport network. They do this for their own interests, but at the same time they help the whole country in the process. By building roads, ports, hospitals, schools and much more, the Nigerian society and economy are also helped. Even if the companies withdraw from the country, their investments will remain in the future. Thus, the companies have helped the country develop in a sustainable way. This one-time investment could be a starting point for an everlasting development so that Nigeria rises from its ashes. From this point of view, oil production is definitely a great potential for the country.
Finally, one of the main arguments of the oil opponents is that oil production causes massive environmental damage in the Niger Delta. Leaks or insufficient measures on the part of the companies cause oil to leak out and contaminate the environment. One litre of oil is enough to contaminate 600 litres of water.For this reason, the Niger Delta no longer resembles an ecosystem, but rather a wasteland. Trees and plants have died, people have been displaced, fish have died and the water of the river is polluted by oil. These developments burden all following generations, even if oil production itself is stopped. This thus speaks clearly that oil production in Nigeria is a danger.

In summary, one has to make a balancing act, taking both sides into account. Oil production can be a starting point for a development of the country similar to that of the UAE. Nigeria, as the largest country in Africa, can be  taken as a symbol for the diversity between the country getting richer and most of the people living there poorer. The oil production plays a significant role in this topic. So the upcoming question is wether the oil production is a big chance for Nigeria or a major danger in the long term.

The decrease of the unemployment rate is often taken as a argument for the oil production but often there are two  main points forgotten about it. The safety at work and looking at the numbers in context. The safety at the oil production is nothing compared to the safety precautions in Europe. The health issues coming with the reduction of oil isn’t taken seriously and therefore many workers suffer years later from oil-caused health issues. The other important fact is that people don’t look a the numbers of the oil related jobs in context. A little bit more than 300.000 seems to be much at the first look, but Nigeria has a population of 201 Million. So less than 1% of the whole population is working at a oil related job. So the argument that the oil production is offering a lot of jobs is good is actually not that good.
Moreover looking at the long term the oil production will be decreasing soon as there won’t be much more oil left. So there won’t be  “much” jobs related with the production soon.
A more dramatical fact on the other hand is the ongoing problems caused by the clash of the ethnic groups. The control of the production of oil is so important to them that there are gang fires. Getting between these two fronts is dangerous and have often lead to death. The oil production doesn’t have to be closed but giving all of the groups a part of the production would maybe silence them.
A even more significant contra argument is the environment damage coming with the oil production. Not only is there a increase in the pollution if the Niger dielst but the leaks in the tanks are also killing fishes and birds as wells as forcing farmers to abandon their fields. The oil production is damaging the agricultural, another huge income for Nigeria. 


So all in all you can say that the production of oil may seem good at the first look but it won’t be in the long shot. Nigeria should stick to other incomes and try to compensate the missing income from the oil production as soon in the future it could get back at it’s feet. By doing this it would not only help the people but also the environment.

But this point has a tremendous counterargument which can be a cause for a economic crisis within Nigeria.
Because oil is a finite raw material there is an ending of the oil deposits. So if their deposits become empty the economy has to face a huge crisis because of the huge amount of lost jobs. The GDP would sink rapidly and lots of families would suffer from the potential unemployment.
Also it's important to say due to the different ethnic groups within the country it occurs a problem which can lead to an oil related war. The control of the oil deposits is a highly regarded good which can cause a war, if one of the big ethnic groups has a less amount of oil than the other. Getting between these parteys can be very dangerous and rather ignite the war than dispute it.

By taking everything into account I come to the conclusion that Nigeria has to create a new mainstay for their economy and culture especially because of the finiteness of the oil. Although it has created an important amount of job opportunities it can lead to a recession because of the decreasing oil deposits.
Also it could cause a war between the ethnic groups within Nigeria because of the different distribution of the oil.
So all in all I'm divided between both positions because I think the oil industry slumbers full of potential but it can't and shouldn't be a economic mainstay due to it finiteness.

Comment on the potential and dangers of Nigeria’s oil production.

Nigeria produced more than 1.9 barrels of oil per day in 2014 to rank as the the 11th-largest oil producer in the world.
The country produced around 2 million barrels per day between 2015 and 2019. Nigeria is home to the second-largest proven oil reserves in Africa.
Nevertheless, up to 70 percent of the population there live in poverty and struggle with environmental pollution.

In the following I will discuss about the potential and dangers of Nigeria’s oil production.

First of all, due to the strong promotion of large farms, agriculture was neglected so that the state made itself dependent on oil.
A positive aspect is, that the oil production have positive affects for the people in charge.
The oil industry offers 250.000 jobs which leads to the decrease of unemployment rate.
 So the rate of poor people is falling due to the job offers.
It is important to mention that it have great potential in the short term but it does not provide enough opportunities for the future.

The oil production has serious consequences for the environment.
The pipes are often out of date and illegal tapped pipelines are not properly sealed. 
As a result, tons of petroleum have been spilled and polluted in the Niger Delta.
The leaking oil contaminates the soils on which the people in this region (who primarily live from agriculture) are dependent. Furthermore the drinking water is poisoned and fish stocks are destroyed. The water pollution through demand pool leaks.
But the oil industry does not only have negative consequences for the environment.
The oil production leads to conflicts between ethnic groups living in the area because the south is richer than the north because auf the vast oil reserves that are found in the Niger Delta area.
In addition, gas is burned over and over again, which leads to the creation of toxic fumes that are harmful to health.

Considering all arguments you must come to the conclusion that the oil production has more dangers than potentials.
Of course, the benefits are serious too, bit it is much worse that it destroys the environment and, in general, there is always a lot of conflicts in the oil companies. Besides, prosperity is not more important than the environment.

With this pollution many people can´t have an clean water access. The marine animals are also in danger and if people eat this see animals, they could also be in danger. 
So oil production doesn’t only brings positive aspect. The last point is that in Nigeria there will be many ethnic groups, which could leads to a conflict between those living area, which also brings negative effect. 

All in all, the oil production is good for the future in Nigeria but if the government doesn’t focus the problems on people and always focuses on making money.
