My goal is for my students to love learning Spanish. I want them to be motivated to learn about Spanish speaking cultures and see being bilingual as an asset. This motivation will drive them to learn the language through our classroom community as they work on their academics.

Challenges could be lack of background knowledge and academic vocabulary in English. I will need to provide strong vocabulary instruction and make sure that I bridge this with English academic vocabulary. Students will be acquiring Spanish but also content instruction for their grade.

I think one of the greatest challenges is to make sure students grow simultaneously in both languages. This is year we are adding "COVID 19" challenge to the mix! Both challenges can be overcome by multiple opportunities to participate and interact in different and innovative ways and consistent collaboration among colleagues, parents, administration, and community.

The SIP program goal is to not only strive for excellence in academics, across the board, but to motivate a new generation of learners to prepare for future where they can be biliterate, bicultural, and bilingual. As a SIP teacher, my goal is for my students to find enjoyment in mastering the building blocks as they learn a new language. I want them to feel so proud of themselves as they work towards learning Spanish. I want to motivate them to always try their best, even when they encounter challenges.

Due to COVID some of our first graders will come in with a gap that will need to filled at the beginning. Trying to work between new skills and filling in gaps and simultaneous teaching online live will be challenging. I feel one way we can target this task is to plan and collaborate with everyone in the program.
J.Peterson

I also feel that some students will be coming in with deficits in their native English language, that and with the possibility of a lot of absences, making sure designing remote learning is on point and useful for students' learning needs. Finding a way to close English gaps while teaching Spanish at the same time is going to be a challenge. Having that strong parent communication, using MAP and baseline tools, and collaborating together as a team will be a way to help overcome those challenges.

One of the biggest challenges will be to close gaps. Students did not complete kinder in the classroom and now they will face a new challenged acquiring a second language. Another challenge is that a percentage of students will be learning in person and another percentage through remote learning.
