"What are we? Humans? Or animals? Or savages? What's grownups going to think?" (page 91): The boys are slowly losing themselves to their savage natures and their innocence is slipping away.

"And in the middle of them, with filthy body, matted hair, and unwiped nose, Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man’s heart, and the fall through the air of the true, wise friend called Piggy. " (page 202): This is one of the last sentences in the book. Ralph's overall thoughts on the situation once it's finally over focus mainly on the loss of his innocence, which was truly highlighted by Piggy's death.

"And what happened? What's grown-ups goin' to think? Young Simon was murdered." (page 171): The word "murdered" is used in this quote to show the true serious nature of the situation and the word "young" is emphasize to how the innocence of Simon, the character representing the good side of humanity, has been destroyed.

“Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill!' said the head. For a moment or two the forest and all the other dimly appreciated places echoed with the parody of laughter. 'You knew, didn’t you? I’m part of you? Close, close, close! I’m the reason why it’s no go? Why things are what they are?" (page 143): The Lord of the Flies taunts Simon and confirms his fear that the violence on the island is caused by the boys' own human natures.

"Unless we get frightened of people." (page 84): This is foreshadowing for the inevitable conflicts within the group.

"However Simon thought of the beast, there rose before his inward sight the picture of a human, at once heroic and sick." (page 103): Simon is the one character who realizes that the true beast the group should be fearing is their own human nature.

"The undergrowth at the side of the scar was shaken and a multitude of raindrops fell pattering." (page 1): The crash site is being described as a "scar" on the surface of an otherwise untouched island.

"Soon the darkness was full of claws, full of the awful unknown and menace." (page 99): The darkness is scary on the island; it's full of potential violence and terror.

"Up, for once, were clouds, great bulging towers that sprouted away over the island, grey and cream and copper-colored." (page 137): The scenery of the island is unnatural and menacing, even the clouds.

"He did desperate violence to his naked body among the rasping creepers so that the blood was sliding over him." (page 67): Ralph hurts himself when he tries to see if they can be rescued from the island because he is in such a rush, showing his desperation to leave.

Song: Savages by Marina and the Diamonds

This song relates to Lord of the Flies because the lyrics are about the cruel nature of humanity. Lyrics such as "Underneath it all, we’re just savages, hidden behind shirts, ties, and marriages" and "I’m not afraid of God, I am afraid of man" tie into the book especially well. The boys are all seemingly normal at first but they slowly start to become more violent and cruel, relating to the first set of lyrics. The second set of lyrics relates to when Simon thinks that the beast may actually be a human in chapter six.
