The DNA Casework Unit (DCU) provides DNA examinations to law enforcement in order to support unsolved cases whether that be crimes or a missing person. DNA samples are compared to known individuals in order to associate victims and suspects with each other, evidence items, or crime scene. The three types of DNA testing are nuclear DNA, y chromosome, and mitochondrial DNA. Nuclear DNA testing is used for identifying an individual as being in contact with evidence item. Y chromosome DNA is specific to the male chromosome, y, and is useful for sexual assaults and such. Mitochondrial DNA is used for identifying a maternal lineage and unique identifications aren't possible- this method is normally used for small pieces of evidence.
