Since then, Walter's family has consistently been community leaders in Longview, TX.          <description><![CDATA[<div>William George Northcutt, fought in the Civil War and when he came back to their home in Acworth, GA, and found it had been burned to the ground. From November 15 until December 21, 1864, Union General William T. Sherman led some 60,000 soldiers on a 285-mile march from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia. The purpose of Sherman’s March to the Sea was to frighten Georgia’s civilian population into abandoning the Confederate cause. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>W. G. Northcutt’s son, William Davis Northcutt I, graduated in the second class of Texas A &amp; M and the University of Louisville Medical Department. He was a local physician and surgeon for the T&amp;P, Sabine &amp; Northwest, and I &amp; G.N. railways for 35 years. He served as the City Health Officer and served as Longview's mayor twice. William and Eda Mauthe had 7 children: Leon, Emma, Dolly, Flossie, William Jr., Eda and Jessie. W. D. Northcutt I was born on November 12, 1861 and died on November 20, 1931 at the age of 70.</div>]]></description>

Northcutt moved to an area in Harrison County, known as present-day Hallsville, TX, in 1869 with his wife, Julia Ann Moore, mother, Elizabeth Ann Harris Northcutt, and one of his brothers. After staying for a year in Hallsville, William and his wife moved to Longview, bought a block downtown, and opened up the Northcutt Hardware &amp; Furniture Company.</div>]]></description>

He grew up in Longview and graduated in the class of 1950 at Longview High School. William graduated from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1957 after receiving his undergraduate degree from the university in 1954. He served two years in the U.S Air Force and was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska. He retired from the service and went home to Longview to practice orthodontics until 1995.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

William became a founder and leader of countless philanthropic and civic pursuits, was a two-term City Council member from 1983 to 1987, and at some point was president, chairman, director or trustee of nearly every organization in the city. Her grandfather was born in Galveston, TX in 1901 and started working in 1915 as a stevedore on sailing ships; he then managed the Texas City Railroad Company, and later ran the Galveston Wharves. Walter remembers going to visit his grandfather during the summer and having a great time fishing.</div>]]></description>

Walter grew up in Longview, TX when its population was only 40,000 compared to 82,951 today. At the age of 16, Walter worked for a family friend, Brew Houston, at the Brew Pontiac and Honda dealership changing oil, washing cars, and other miscellaneous jobs at the rate of $2.75/hr during the summer.</div>]]></description>
