In 2017 12.9% of people in the US were in areas that were considered "Food Deserts" (areas with little to no food) the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) says that is almost 39.5 million people. The USDA explains food deserts as low income areas where healthy and affordable food is limited.

In 2023 13.5% of US households experienced food insecurity, this is a significant change because in 2022 it was only 12.8% now it doesn't seem like a lot but that translates to 18 million homes and it affected 47.4 millions Americans. Another form of food insecurity is very low food security, affecting 5.1% of homes.

Small corner stores have a big role in food access, mainly for low income people and families, small corner stores often are the main source of food for those who need it, and who have limited access to bigger supermarkets. People have researched that some corner stores may have affordable prices, their options are not the most healthy and are limited. Some times corner stores are the only stores in communities, making them necessary for food security

Due to politicians trying to segregate black and white people they divided the city and Troost was the dividing line. The east side of Troost then slowly became a food dessert. Even though there are plenty of convenience stores, Fresh food is hard to come by as grocery stores are few and far in between.

This amount of waste has far-reaching impacts on society:

Wholesome food that could have helped feed families in need is sent to landfills.
Land, water, labor, energy and other inputs are used in producing, processing, transporting, preparing, storing, and disposing of discarded food.
