Some characters spend their lives resisting change and instead, prefer the familiarity and comfort of sameness. Arthur Leander could be considered one of these characters, because although he appears to lead a glamorous life, his life is somewhat repetitive. Arthur repeats mistakes, as evidenced by his string of failed marriages. It is not until the end of his life that he starts to realise that he must change. However, he meets his death before he is able to make any real changes to his life.

In contrast, other characters embrace change. Jeevan Chaudhary, the paparazzo turned paramedic, continues to reinvent himself in an attempt to find purpose and satisfaction in his life. Many characters, such as Jeevan, have to readjust to the new world and civilisation of which they find themselves in after the Georgian Flu. Change is seen in many different ways, its seen through death and illness, friendships, relationships and life itself. The way in which the characters live in this new world has completely changed to the years previous.
