Under the rule of Ashur, the Aseres Hashvatim of Malchus Yisrael are taken into galus. This was generally step 3 in Ashur's Modus Operandi for dealing with conquered nations being insubordinate. There had already been kings who rebelled and were replaced, leaving exile as Ashur's final retaliation for Malchus Yisrael rebelling and allying with Mitzrayim. This policy plays a vital role in the tapestry of Jewish History; the exile of the ten tribes changed the course of Jewish History forever. Not only were these ten Shevatim lost from the continuity of the Jewish people, but their exile provided a lesson that Malchus Yehuda could not ignore - a call to teshuva that continues to be heard for all generations.

Assyrian Annals vs. Melachim II

Ashur's records reflect the Assyrian perspective, showing their believed dominance and approach to breaking the national spirit of people they conquer. It emphasizes their imperial pride in reshaping populations as tools of control. In contrast, Navi offers a different view, portraying the galus as a result of Malchus Yisrael's sins and failure to uphold their relationship with Hashem. While Ashur viewed their strategy as a display of power, the Torah interprets this as Divine Providence, intended to awaken the Jewish people to return to their spiritual roots and do Teshuva.

Yerushalmi’s Zachor teaches us that Hashem is intimately involved in history, shaping it as a means of building His relationship with the Jewish people. The emphasis on memory underscores the Torah’s role as more than a record—it is a guide for understanding our purpose and spiritual mission. In Jeremiah 29, the message is clear: even in exile, Jews are called to seek meaning and connection to Hashem by working for peace and prosperity in their environment. This reflects the period beginning in 3338 when the Jewish people lived in galus Bavel and were tasked with maintaining their Emunah while also contributing to their host society. It illustrates that every historical moment has significance and can be transformed into an opportunity for growth, bitachon, and kiddush Hashem

The Cyrus Cylinder reflects the Persian policy of religious tolerance, focusing on their role as liberators and restorers. This political maneuver strengthened their empire by winning loyalty from conquered nations. In contrast, the nevu'os of Ezra emphasizes the Jewish perspective: Cyrus’s actions are seen as divinely inspired, part of Hashem’s plan to allow the Jews to rebuild the Beit Hamikdash. While the Persian document focuses on human diplomacy and power, the Navi frames the same event as a fulfillment of nevuah and a reminder of Hashem’s hand in history.

I think that teaching Tanach and Jewish History together is extremely important, because it allows students to connect the dots between the two in ways that they often aren't able to. Combining the subjects allows them to both see history within tanach, as well as find meaning and hashkafic takeaways within Jewish History. Using historical primary sources is another good way to help Jewish history "come to life" for students. I remember sitting in historia class in high school with my world history notes, comparing the two. It was really helpful not just as a way of connecting my learning, but also to give meaning and a Jewish perspective to my regular history class.

In terms of adapting this assignment for my students, I don't think I would change much. My students are 11th graders, so they can handle something like this. I would probably have to do it in class, though, so I could be available to answer questions. Because they learn so much Navi, t also could be interesting for them to compare Melachim and Divrei Hayamim to discuss the differences between them, and the implications of those differences.
