A Learning Management System (LMS) is a dynamic, centralized, software platform which is used to create, deliver, and administer learning. A comprehensive LMS supports online-only, blended, or classroom-style learning and integrates with other related systems within the organization. The LMS is also where participation and performance data for learning activities is stored.

Information Technology specialists handle the installation and technical maintenance of the LMS including security management and hardware performance. The system is managed on the “back-end” by System Administrators who manage user accounts including roles and duties, create courses, manage the look-and-feel, and coordinate training and testing for updates and changes to the system. The LMS is utilized by faculty, subject matter experts, and training staff to conduct online training including web conferencing, self-directed courses, and assessments – including performance reports and completion tracking. Users of an LMS are generally students, employees, or customers who have access to course materials, complete assignments, and track grades and process. In large organizations these roles may be exclusive, while in smaller organizations their functions may overlap.

I chose 80: Single Sing [Sign] On because this is a project that I have heard rumors about at my company, but not previously understood. Single Sign On (SSO) allows authentication of a user by a single set of credentials (username and password) for multiple applications. The benefit of SSO is a seamless experience for users who may have to move from one application to another very quickly and frequently to complete their duties.

For example, in the process of opening a new account at my financial institution, users have separate programs for each of these functions: notification of member in need of assistance, completing account opening, and printing/ordering debit card. While information is accessible behind the scenes in each program, the user requires a separate login to complete each function. A consideration for linking too many programs via SSO is security for our members – if a user’s SSO information is compromised, a lot of access is potentially allowed.

This article from Microsoft discusses SSO for Enterprise (business) and highlights the three types of SSO services available from Microsoft in greater detail: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa745042(v=bts.10).aspx. This is the “What is Single Sign On?” page from Auth0, which is a product that assists with SSO: https://auth0.com/docs/sso/current. I found it interesting that there is a market for additional products, to create SSO within your company.

The feature that I chose was #94 (Training Metrics). From the websites that I researched, training metrics is one way to measure the value of learning and development within the learning management system. These metrics are then evaluated to see what works for learners. Throughout training programs, individual progress can be tracked to make sure that learners are improving and proficient with their tasks. For example, eLearning assessment results based on training simulations can track to see if a learner is applying what they have learned through the training programs.

https://elearningindustry.com/lms-metrics-elearning-professionals-should-look-for

Originally when I started doing research I was really interested in both SCORM and tin can API. My knowledge of them is very limited, but I briefly heard about them while constructing learning modules in captivate. From my initial understanding they used to track learners – such as when someone takes a quiz at the end of a learning module, one can use analytics to see how much they learned from the module. After seeing Sean Williams post on Tin Can API, I thought it would be interesting to expand on Learning Record Store (LRS) as I’m not familiar with that either.

LRS or Learning Record Store essentially allows a standard area to store user / learning data in a database. This database can then interface with not just Tin can / experience API but learning management systems. It can exist inside of an LMS, or outside of one. Either way LRS can be accessed and the information can be shared across multiple LMS’. While Scorm.com calls it the “heart” of an API management system, I would I probably say it is more analogous to the brain where long term memories are stored.

https://experienceapi.com/learning-record-store/

https://learninglocker.net/

https://scorm.com/what-is-an-lrs-learning-record-store/

for more information about experience API:

https://experienceapi.com/overview

I also found a neat flow chart on Scorm.com that shows a nice diagram on how LRS' can be integrated into Learning management and other systems.

I picked Perpetual Licensing. I was unfamiliar with what the meaning behind perpetual licensing was. When I looked it up, I understood it as being: an upfront cost for a specific software, and then you pay yearly fee's too get the newest upgrades. You can pick up the software for a one time fee - and it is yours. However, if you want continued support for that specific software purchased, you can pay a yearly fee to get upgrades, and continued support for that software. I found my sources from the following articles - https://talentedlearning.com/lms-license-models-what-in-the-world-is-going-on/

http://redstack.com.au/support/blog_posts/desktop-subscription-vs-perpetual-license

I believe that this is an outdated model now.

#22 Compliance - AICC

In my industry, Healthcare IT systems must be in compliance with various regulations and industry/technical standards. In examining the various features of Learning Management Systems, I became interested in feature #22 Compliance - AICC. I have never heard of AICC and felt it was something worth looking into.

AICC stands for the Aviation Industry CBT Committee, which is an international non-profit association of technology professionals. In reading the organization’s name, my initial thought was that it is specific to the aviation industry. However, some material I found indicated that participants do not have to be developing courses for the aviation industry to utilize this technical standard.

I was able to locate a large volume of interesting material pertaining to AICC standards and learned that AICC specifications were designed to be general purpose, and not specific to the aviation industry. With this information, I assumed that since the aviation industry is so prevalent today, AICC standards would be widely accepted within other industries. However, the more I researched, I eventually stumbled upon material that indicated the AICC was dissolved in December 2014, due to declining participation. Needless to say, I was upset that I wasted so much time researching a non-existent feature of a modern LMS.

I decided to return to the article and choose another feature to research. However, I noticed that the date of the article we are using is June 10, 2013. With the rapidly changing nature of technology, it’s no surprise that some of the features listed in the article are no longer applicable.

This conundrum piqued my curiosity, so I delved a bit deeper. I discovered that as the AICC was disbanding, they worked to make AICC content compliant with CMI-5 (Computer Managed Instruction), which is a “profile” for using the experience API (xAPI) specification with traditional learning management systems. I also learned that AICC “paved the way for standardizing the interoperability of elearning content. The organization worked tirelessly for 26 years creating and maintaining the learning technology framework that was built upon by SCORM and xAPI”. While that fact gave me some solace, I still feel I wasted an inordinate amount of time, which would have been better spent on other assignments.

http://www.proedit.com/just-what-are-scorm-and-aicc/

https://www.trainingindustry.com/taxonomy/a/aicc.aspx

https://www.learnupon.com/cmi5-new-rules-xapi/

My first choice to write about here is SCORM, since I've heard about it quite a bit when talking to people who work in the T&D field, but it looks like it's been covered pretty well already. (I still looked it up to find out for myself, but I'm reporting back on 3d simulation software.) I keep in touch with people who work in T&D for major organizations such as Deloitte Consulting and Northrop Grumman and some of the big new technologies that will be very important in the future are things like immersive learning, adaptive learning, and 3d simulated learning. NG is on the forefront of using virtual reality 3d simulations for their training programs (they work extensively with government and military contracts).

Some of the benefits of using 3d simulation for training are that it could increase motivation for learners to engage with the material, as it is presented in an interactive and interesting way. This strategy can also easily incorporate gamification to remove the idea of training being a mandatory chore. Additionally, as 3d simulations are a branch of eLearning, it can be a cost effective way of delivering the same material as would be offered in a classroom setting, but without all of the associated costs of that formal setting. Instructional designers can also incorporate extensive customization into their simulations by giving the learner options to control and customize their own learning experience, which again, increases learner motivation.

https://elearningindustry.com/5-tips-3d-simulation-software-training

A learning management system is basically just an interface that brings the teacher and student together in one central space. The LMS provides an interface where instructors can create, store, disseminate, and evaluate their learning materials. Meanwhile, students can access these materials, edit them, upload their own content, and interact with each other. A good LMS includes features that simulate an in-person learning experience by encouraging active participation and collaboration among students.

LMS, LCMS, or CMS?

One confusion I have had for a while is the difference between an LMS and an LCMS. Then again, what is a CMS? Here is what I found.

I learned on OpenSesame.com that the two are quite different. LMS stands for learning management system. An LCMS, on the other hand, is a learning content management system.

Learning management systems are used primarily in higher education and corporate training. These are what we commonly think of as complete online classroom management systems. They are software platforms for storage and delivery of training content, much like Learn, that we use. In addition, they also have capabilities for tracking participation in that training. This happens to make them the ideal medium where safety training, or legally-mandate compliance must be documented for individual employees or trainees. The target user, then, is the learner.

The target user for the LCMS, however is the learning content creator, or the instructional designer. The LCMS is all about content: primarily creating it, and then storing and organizing it. LCMS are built to allow multiple collaborators to create, and then publish, content in a variety of formats. In the corporate world the LCMS is often used to take older versions of training courses and customize them with newly created content. Content creation itself is facilitated by features of the LCMS.

The CMS (content management system), briefly, is a system geared toward storing and displaying content on a website. The CMS is built to accommodate and make content available in a wide variety of image, document, and audio formats. Another strength of the CMS is that administrators can choose to show or hide content based on viewer or user level or credentials, or simply make items private or public.

So, the three terms are not interchangeable, though there is some overlap. For this article click here.

~

I researched #33, Customizable Branding. While I have experience in developing civic and operational branding in my professional life, this piqued my interest and I discovered new things that I found valuable.

After reading “Should you brand or white label your LMS?” (6/21/16 https://www.learnupon.com/brand-white-label-lms/) I discovered the importance of the decision-making process when determining whether to use company logos and colors, etc., in the effort to make the LMS have the “feel” of an internally produced LMS. Decisions should be made regarding this use in areas like; login page, user portals, and client portals. This decision is also influenced by any flexibility to customize which will vary depending on whether you use an internally developed LMS (which generally has more flexibility in customization), or if the LMS is one purchased and already in use. Many LMS that are designed to be used in organizations who purchase the system find that as the original developer or organization wishes for their branding to take precedent over yours. This can lead to limits on adding or changing any LMS purchased from outside your organization. A risk involved with custom branding is making sure to re-evaluate your branding on a regular basis to make sure it still fits the image the organization wishes to project. It is important to assign a specific person(s) to be responsible for keeping the custom effort in branding current and up-to-date. While this sounds inflexible there are LMS’s available that offer a “white label” option which refers to those LMS that can and will remove all references or identifiers that indicate the LMS was developed anywhere other than in-house. Additional white label benefits can include; custom domains, personalized emails, and client portals. When planning your development or purchase of a customizable LMS it is important to determine what the needed customizable features are so that you can deliver a proper branded LMS that meets the organization’s needs.~

I learned that single sign-on is about being able to use one password or login for all your apps, emails, websites and social media accounts. It is secure login application/website where you are able to use one username and login. From my understanding the cloud is what is used to share all information between you phone, tablets, desktops and laptops. To me it seems easier especially if you have a business or even as a student.
Currently I allow my laptop to save my passwords so all I have to do is click "sign in". It is convenient and I do not have to re enter my username and password each time. I would love for my phone to have this feature, I feel that using a SOS system would be beneficial to me

I chose #52 - Legacy Systems Integration from the listing of 99 LMS Features that you can use to compare LMS Vendors. The reason that I chose this particular listing was because I was not familiar with the term Legacy Systems Integration or what it meant. I found some great information on the internet explaining what the term Legacy Systems Integration refers to, why it is still used, and the advantages and disadvantages of using a legacy system. After reviewing several different sites, I discovered that a legacy system is an outdated computer system, application, or software that has a new and improved version or approach that is available and that sometimes businesses choose to keep their outdated systems and maintain them due to the cost and potential risk of replacing the old system. Sometimes the cost of maintaining these systems can be as costly as replacing the old system. One of the major disadvantages of using a legacy system is that the security is very vulnerable. Two websites that I visited that were very informational are listed below:

http://go.galegroup.com/ps/i.do?id=GALE%7CA54130045&sid=googleScholar&v=2.1&it=r&linkaccess=fulltext&issn=00010782&p=AONE&sw=w&authCount=1&u=albu16399&selfRedirect=true

https://www.techopedia.com/definition/635/legacy-system

I chose number 7, Gamification. Gamification according to Google is "the application of typical elements of game playing (e.g., point scoring, competition with others, rules of play) to other areas of activity, typically as an online marketing technique to encourage engagement with a product or service." I think that this idea could be a fun addition to any LMS environment. For example, instead of giving a traditional quiz on a book chapter through a LMS, a instructor could set up a game show type application through a website like Kahoot to engage the student better, and possibly cause the student to do better on the test. Here is an online article showing how gamification is being used in the education industry. As you can see, gamification can be used for many different educational situations, such as simulated combat, skill enrichment and practice, and training to recognize differences from the normal flow of a environment.

https://elearningindustry.com/6-killer-examples-gamification-in-elearning

Wyatt

SCORM has been the language used to capture information regarding a user’s learning experience and actions in an eLearning course. SCORM is very limited in what information it is able to capture. Tin Can, also known as xAP or Experience API attempts to capture a greater level of detail across multiple platforms. API, Application Programing Interface, is a way for different software’s to talk to each. Tin Can requires an LRS to gain the full benefits from the API. LRS is the next step in further development of LMS’s. The complexity of Tin Can requires greater planning and structure to see the full benefits of the language. I’m excited about the possibility of Tin Can but also see the potential for data overload. As a student, I’ll be able to better demonstrate my skills and knowledge, but as an instructor, I’ll receive a lot more information that will need to be digested.

Any media associated with the question will play. All templates use Responsive Web Design to adapt to different screen sizes from mobile devices to desktops. It has an enhanced Reporter application with new and redesigned reports that show data by exam, use, and question. If you know of anyone who have used this system, please comment. I am trying to find whether there is much difference between this feature and SCORM feature, or if it communicates.

Gaby

Legacy system integration is the feature I was unfamiliar with. A legacy system is usually the older version of a software program. All of the things that worked with a legacy system are typically placed into the newer model of hat software. Legacy system integration is the term that deals with integrating either newer software with the legacy system or integrating new hardware with the legacy system. Integration can be difficult due to how un-compatible older hardware/software is with newer software. So when we hear about a LMS that has legacy system integration we should be relieved to know that this LMS has taken steps to mitigate integration issues from the past and for the future.

The below article that I have attached outlines that, “Basically, the different versions of SCORM all govern the same two things: packaging content an exchanging data at run-time. Packaging is the information of the content in the system. The documents used are structured to be launched without human intervention. Run-time is the delivery and tracking of content. This is how the LMS interact with the experience of the LMS.

The article also outlined that SCORM is becoming widely adopted and an industry standard. As I understand SCORM is for interoperability with the content. The article is a short and informative one.

https://scorm.com/scorm-explained/one-minute-scorm-overview/

Certification Tracking Systems are an online organization system to collect and track multiple people’s certifications and arrange them in a meaningful way. Some provide a way to teach, and offer a way to actually become certified. After doing research on these systems I realized that I was more familiar with them than I had previously though. I have actually used them in my current job. New employees are required to get Certs in things like Ferpa law before they can work. The system we use allows the new hires to learn the information they need, take tests to become certified, and then saves the certifications in a database. These systems aren’t just used as archives but also have practical uses. For instance, if we needed to look up what employees had a certain type of certification that was required for a team we were putting together we could pull this information from the tracking system.

http://www.digitaltimecapture.com/blog/6-essential-certification-tracking-system-features

A feature that I did not understand is #44, Exam Engine. Exam Engine is an examination software that allows the proctor to customize they're testing platforms. This allows the instructor to have versatile options like having test results emailed directly. The instructor can also have direct contact with the student in regards to a certain test. I now know that I have used an exam engine and instructors have customized them differently.
This system can be used in any subject and you can have any type of response method that you want such as multiple choice or true or false. You can change the graphics in this system to fit they style of your class or you can use the default. This is an easy system to use for instructors because there is no programing necessary if you choose to use the default setting. This system does support audio capabilities if the exams require any audio. This system is a great LMS for any instructor and student because it offers great services to make learning online easier for those who may not be as experienced for more complex systems. http://www.vbtrain.net/examengine.aspx

Depending on the LMS and the needs of the administrator the LMS platform can manage the delivery of curriculum and activities to provide a learning opportunity to the user. The LMS has multiple features as has been outlined in the readings. An LMS should be user friendly and intuitive for all users (students and faculty) to maximize the learning opportunity. I have used multiple LMS’s during my studies and professional responsibilities at LAFD and UNM. My experience for the best way to describe an LMS is by its ease of use. It is counterproductive as a user (student and faculty) to have to spend an excessive amount of time learning the system and not the course content.

A Learning Management System (LMS) is a customizable database software/platform which is used to manage learning and training resources, educational programs, and student records. This software makes it possible to manage registration, teaching, attendance, evaluation, and grading of students, as well as the creation of courses. Schools or businesses can conveniently use the same lessons repeatedly, and personalize or upgrade components with new information as needed. The software also tracks and provides necessary information to all departments. Interaction can be created between all parties using email, and has document upload capabilities as well for submissions of outside documents. LMS’s are usually utilized online for global access on multiple devices and can be used blended, with live components, such as having face-to-face lectures and then doing the homework online or vice versa.

When tightly integrated, information from the two systems can be exchanged, ultimately resulting in a richer learning experience for the user and a more comprehensive tool for the learning administrator. An LMS can manage communities of users, allowing each of them to launch the appropriate objects stored and managed by the LCMS. In delivering the content, the LCMS also bookmarks the individual learner’s progress, records test scores, and passes them back to the LMS for reporting purposes.”
https://www.efrontlearning.com/blog/2013/05/lms-and-lcms-whats-the-difference.html

I chose #53: Licensing (Free, Trial, Open Source, Paid) because I did not know what “open source” meant and because Moodle is open source software.

Licensing is the equivalent to copyright laws. Copyright is defined as “the exclusive legal right, given to an originator or an assignee to print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic, or musical material, and to authorize others to do the same.” (Per the online dictionary in Google.) We have all seen the Licensing agreement that we must “Accept” before we can use something. These are serious documents that need to be reviewed.

Note that:

According to GNU.org, “Under the Berne Convention, which most countries have signed, anything written down is automatically copyrighted. This includes programs. Therefore, if you want a program you have written to be in the public domain, you must take some legal steps to disclaim the copyright on it; otherwise, the program is copyrighted.” The Convention was signed in Berne, Switzerland on September 9, 1886. (What is free software?, n.d.)

The types of software licensing on the list are: Free, Trial, Open Source and Paid. Here is a brief explanation of each as well as some other pertinent terms:

Source Code: These are the computer instructions which are written so that humans can read them, usually as ordinary text. Computer code is source code that has been assembled or compiled into binary code that is then understood by the computer.

Free software: This is software that can be used any way you want – copy, use, change or distribute to anyone, modified or not, free or for a fee. The source code must be accessible. This is not monetarily free, but affords freedom of usage.

Trial Software: This is software that you can try for a limited time and then are required to pay for after the trial period.

Open Source Software (OSS): Software that meets these criteria (adapted and shortened from (Open Source Initiative, n.d.)): Allows free distribution, includes source code, allows modification, and other criteria.

Paid Software: This is non-free software. You must ask for permission to use it, cannot modify or redistribute it, source code is not available.

So, basically what I have learned from this research is that Administrators must choose the type of software for their application carefully and read the Licensing Agreements thoroughly. Copyright is no joke – it is illegal to claim someone else’s work without permission. It is our responsibility to ensure our employers do not break the law. We need to understand what is needed and how to legally obtain it.

Links to good information: http://www.gnu.org/licenses/licenses.html and https://opensource.org/licenses. There is a lot of information on licensing online.

Of the 99 LMS features, the one that I seemed to stand out the most was the customizable branding (Item 33). I kept reading it and assumed it was just about placing your school or business logo, but its a lot more than that. I think I would interpret it as the heart and face of the LMS. The informational content is the brain, but without heart, nothing special happens with the brain. But it is not just about logos, its about overall appearance and consistency. The design of the course is crucial for the effective transfer of information. I have personally been witness to this theory in my own studies. I have taken some courses that were very "plain Jane" and bland. There was no originality placed on the site to make it unique. When taking more than one course, this is especially helpful to the overloaded student brain. When i log into certain courses, my brain is automatically reminded of what I did when I last visited that course. It helps to prepare me for what I will encounter. On the other hand, with some courses, I find myself constantly looking up at the course listing to make sure I am understanding what I am doing. When my courses are similar, its easy to get confused, especially if there is nothing unique about the design or brand of the course. First impressions, in this case, daily impressions, are important. Appearance actually aids the success of the course and helps the learner to emotionally prepare for the influx of stimulus and cognitive transmission.

http://www.growthengineering.co.uk/how-your-brand-affects-your-learning-solution/

Instructors create a community of participation and an environment for learning and growth. With the use of discussion forums, synchronous meeting times, and other collaborative tools, students are able to experience learning to their full potential without compromising on the demands and/or pleasures of work and life. A great variety of tools are available for effective assessment of knowledge retention. LMS systems make course instruction more efficient with customizeable methods for information delivery and feedback. In many ways, LMS systems allow for students to succeed in ways that face to face environments do not allow. I wasn't too familiar with this feature, I had figured it was something to do with the LMS authoring an actual story. As I did a little more digging, I came to a definition for storyboarding as a blueprint for creating a e-learning project based with critical planning of the project. This was an interesting topic do to the fact that storyboarding is not necessary, storyboarding could even be done halfway, then another plan taken into action. This system is more efficient if the time is available as well as the ideas of how the planning should go.

Legault, N. (n.d.). 11 Best Practices for E-Learning Storyboarding.

In my own words a learning management system is a comprehensive software application that has multiple educational purposes. Of these purposes they can deliver learning objectives, media, lectures, study material, tests/quizzes, record grades, establish certifications, and have channels of communication. A learning management system is connected to a network of some type whether it be internet, intranet, or a lan network within an organization.
