Our role as educators is to disrupt systemic racism as we become aware of it. This could look like taking on our own implicit bias, speaking out in a kind way when we see a colleague acting on implicit bias, speaking out when we see things like unfair policies happening in real time. Keeping ourselves educated and mindful will allow us to be vigilant in disrupting systemic racism in our education practice, our classrooms, schools and districts.

Systemic racism is a form of racism that is embedded as normal practice within society or an organization. I think what this look like in a classroom is not having updated/ right resources and insufficent funding. How educators can dismantled this is by advocating for fudning and resources.

This can look like grading practices, selection of texts, diminishing of student perspectives and implicit bias. Our role is to identify these practices and to open ourselves up to these conversations. Courageous conversations have a positive impact, but they must be prepared and thoughtfully enacted.
