It brings me so much of excitement as I am meeting Dr Kathi again after meeting her in physical class during my third semester back in 2019. In the class, Dr Karthi had introduced me to a new platform named as Padlet and the class were required to do the E-Portfolio using the Padlet platform. It was the time when I was exploring it, I had found it to be quite interesting as a lot of things can be done using this platform. By not only making things well-organized, Padlet had seemed to be a platform that contained good features on visualizing ideas, thoughts and opinion. During the first class, we were also asked to share our learning goals in which I would honestly emphasized on what am I looking forward to, especially in the Media Resources in ELT classes. I believed that it was important to generate the learning goals in order to ensure that students are aware of what they are learning and what can they make out of it. It is crucially important to have specific learning goals in every subject that students are taking. Hence, to conclude, my first class with Media Resources in ELT was enjoyable and I am really looking forward to explore more on the knowledge of the content that will be facilitated by Dr Karthi.

Based on the discussion, I have personally found myself to be engage in a lot of perspectives regarding the issue and it has take me to the point that every matter that is seemed to be entirely correct are not that really true. This means that when one side of statement does seem to be relevant , it does not mean that the opponent statements are not making sense at all. I have also learned that there could be solutions for disadvantages that were stated by my group in the first place. Therefore, I am readily exposed to contradictions that were portrayed during the mini debate discussion organized by Dr Karthi.

The Significant Role of Media in the EFL learning

Date: 14/12/2020

Topic: The Significant Role of Media in the EFL learning

Duration of Time Spent on this file: 1 hour

Brief reason on this entry:
To share about the learning outcomes that was gained after the lecture and discussion session

Detail explanation of new learning experience:
On December 14th 2020, Dr Karthi have assigned us on reading a journal article entitled as the significant role of media in the EFL learning. According to the journal article, students will have to identify two main points that were being emphasized. From my part, I have discovered the benefits and also the challenges that will be faced by the utilization of media. As I went through the process of analyzing the journal article, I have discovered that media can actually be playing a huge role when it comes to the education world. This means that there are a lot of possibilities that can be discovered in the world of education and this includes the innovation of pedagogy in ELT and how will the world make use of media as the medium to make the pedagogy works throughout the time. It comes to my own realization that media can generate more ideas and creativity skills when it comes to accommodate the requirement of the students living in this era of globalization. Teachers can also be more critical when it comes to designing the course and its accessibility towards the students. Hence, from the topic, I realized that media is one of the most important platforms that has to be taken into the consideration on implementing the educational system specifically in ELT classroom session.

Creating Critical Thinkers Through Media Literacy

Date: 5/1/2021

Topic: Web Advertisement & Its Strength

Duration of Time Spent on this file: 1 hour

Brief reason on this entry:
To share about the self-learning experience that was discovered from a Ted Talk video found in YouTube website

Detail explanation of new learning experience:
On January 5th 2020, I have discovered a Ted Talk video that was emphasizing Media Literacy as a channel to initiate another level of thinking (may differ according to ages) from education perspectives. Based on the Ted Talk speech, my interest was drawn to the part when the speaker mentioned on how the students may decode the media advertisement that she gave during the class. It was an outrageous outcome when the students may actually provide various perspectives on the media advertisement and somehow decode the opposite meaning on what is being portrayed with relevant details. At the end of the speech, she emphasized on how important is media literacy when it comes to giving learners a different kind of view when they are seeing things (especially from the media) in their daily life. Another inspiration that I gained from this video is that I could use the method as what she did to her students and apply it to the suitable lessons that I would want my students to explore specifically in ELT classroom session. Moreover, this type of approach may bring interest among the students especially when it is involving things that they are familiar with and could find outside the school environment.

Date: 7/1/2021

Topic: The World of Internet and its use

Duration of Time Spent on this file: 2 hour

Brief reason on this entry:
To share about the self-learning experience that was discovered from a Ted Talk video found in YouTube website

Detail explanation of new learning experience:
Based on the Ted Talk video that I have watched on YouTube, my attention has been caught to an extent that I would also question on what is the function of teachers when Internet may provide endless amount of information and knowledge to the students especially in the education field. Regardless of the type of courses, on this era of advancement in technology, there are so many questions that could arise regarding the function of teachers in classroom. Referring to the speech made by Joseph Coussette, he, himself as a teacher would see himself as a curator in designing lessons for the knowledge that he would want to deliver. This means that without the existence of teachers, knowledge can be delivered as what they are but in order to make sense of it, students will need teachers for that purpose in some kind of way. It was not all about the countless and endless information that were obtained just at the tip of finger but it should be more of emphasizing the meaning and purpose of the teaching and learning itself, and how connectedness were built especially in the platform of social media. Besides that, I could also relate my own experience through the wonders of Twitters application in which he mentioned during the speech that it could be easier to obtain more perspectives, updates, enhancements and motivation about the field of education around the world especially when we get to choose the community that shares the same interest and passion as we did.

Another exciting part is that regardless of any generation would experience the changes of technology during their learning process, teachers are the profession that will always be relevant and needed in order to rectify any possible misinformation that could happen and obtain from the Internet.

Therefore, I believed that the role of teachers is always undeniable as without it, knowledge can be gained but so does the uncertainty of the truth or facts regarding any knowledge.

Therefore, it appears in my consideration to apply the concept in the form of my teaching method in the future as an ESOL teacher. I believed that entertainment can be used as a tool in providing educational purposes and surely, it has to be carried out with compatible strategies and as a relevant medium to fulfill the learners' needs at the same time. Besides that, the idea of entertainment itself is inviting the students' curiosity and self-learning exploration in which not much of emphasis being pointed out in the real classroom session these days. Hence, I believed that the entertainment concept that could be utilize as tool to facilitate in language learning in classroom session is a great option for teachers and educators could make use of.

THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF VALUES THROUGH TELEVISION

Date: 17/1/2021

Topic: Television and Education Systems

Duration of Time Spent on this file: 3 hours

Brief reason on this entry: To share about self-learning experience that was discovered from a journal article

Detail explanation of new learning experience:

According to the journal article that I have come across, the study was based on the hypothesis that television content themselves constitute a source of learning through television narratives. In specific terms, the scholar defended that the idea of possibility to teach and learn values through said narratives. The fact is that the study was also dealing with the relationship between television and values which is categorized from three-fold standpoint: the content themselves, the medium itself and the language. Based on the reading that I have done, the journal article generates question on my mind such as should we continue to think that television encourages habits of passiveness, impedes the development of creativity, takes time away from reading and other children’s activities and is linked to the low levels of achievement at school?

It leads me to the thought that if the above assertions are true, then why do professionals in the field of education not try to turn television viewing into an opportunity for studying the values and counter-values that are explicitly or implicitly conveyed? In my opinion, the familiarity of learners with the context of watching television in their daily routine should be in consideration on manifesting the idea of using it for their educational purpose. Regardless of what subject it could be, television content may generate a logical context in making sense of what lessons are all about. The idea and the narrative provided from television content may not only facilitate a learners’ progress but as well as leading them to a better critical thinking in which they can relate what they have seen with what they have learned in schools. Last but not least, I would agree with the conclusion made by the scholar in which they emphasized that television narratives may offer many opportunities for the discussion of dilemmas and different situations that go well beyond the traditional curriculum.

Benefits of Using Movies in Education

Date: 20/1/2021

Topic: Television and Education Systems (Movies: Genres and its message)

Duration of Time Spent on this file: 1 hour

Brief reason on this entry:
To share about the learning outcomes that was gained after the lecture and discussion session

Detail explanation of new learning experience:
When I was a child, I would sometimes watch Disney movies during school holidays to fill in my pastime. According to my experience, under the supervision by my aunt at that time, I have learned so many moral values that were being introduced from the movies. It could be from Cinderella that exhibits the values of having patience on going through hardships or it could be from Pocahontas that taught me the importance of staying true to yourself even when things seemed dull. Not to forget, as years go by, my learning journey facilitated with the tool such as movies, would provide better sense in understanding heavy issues such as racism, language inappropriacy, domestic violence and many more. However, it was rarely for me to see the concept of utilizing movies as a tool especially in a real classroom setting in Malaysia just like how the American people practices in their educational setting. For instance, in History subject, they were required to watch “Schindler’s List” after having discussion on World War II and Holocaust. Hence, taking the perspectives on having tons of benefits that utilizing movies as an educational tool may provide better learning outcomes, I would take the consideration of changing the traditional landscape on how we usually practice teaching strategy for English classroom in Malaysia.

In my opinion, teachers may use popular films as it would enhance student’s learning and understanding of the topic. This may happen for several reasons such as repetition which is a good way to increase memory performance. Besides that, students benefit from using multiple modalities when learning about a topic. For instance, if they read about Independence Day in a textbook, have the teacher explain certain events to them, and watch a movie about it, this engages all senses which deepens their understanding. Related to the previous point, having students watch a movie in addition to reading the textbook is a form of dual coding which is one of the go-to learning strategies to enhance a performance. Last but not least, I believed that adding a movie to classroom instruction may be taken by students as an entertaining and welcoming change and in turn, may increase their motivation and interest in the topic.

It also leads me to the thoughts on what could be done in order to preserve the legacy of print media these days. Adding to the wonders, if ever the concept of print media is being eliminated in the future, how can our next generation experience the learning that involves print media just like we did in the old days. Referring to

Leandrea Adelaine Louw, in her speech, she brought up two points on how she believed that Print Media will still be relevant in this digital era. The points that she indicated was tangibility and credibility. Reflecting to her points, I believed that it is true to say so as print media could provide better sense of appreciating the content that is trying to be delivered by the author by reading and feeling the surface of paper and ink at the same time instead of reading through digital screen these days with just buy clicking buttons. Based on her opinions, it made me realized that print media is capable to be an excellent aid for students to feel the material physically rather than just indulge in technology tools which can be unhealthy too for the students.

Date: 25/1/2021

Topic: Print Media & Digital Media

Duration of Time Spent on this file: 1 hour

Brief reason on this entry:
To share about the learning outcomes that was gained after the presentation session

Detail explanation of new learning experience:
For this entry, I would like to reflect on the idea of using visual aids in ESL classroom. Based on my preference, I would definitely choose visual aids as it could be utilized in the form of print and also digital. Visual aids are essential as it could stimulate learners' ability to think beyond and generate more ideas and this could be useful especially in the activity that requires them to think critically. As the matter of fact, even from the role as a teacher, preparing such tools for the students, I could enhance my ability to innovate the idea of creating lesson plans although I am reusing the same type of material. This indicates that both teacher and students may actually gain benefits respectively when using this type of material.

The idea to choose visual aids for the presentation was inspired by my nephew, Aqeef Fahri which is a toddler aged 1 year plus. As his mother was buying flashcards for him, it comes to the sense on my mind that the flashcards were absolutely interesting and advocating at the same time. I have begin to question on how can I use it in ESL classroom without implying the same purpose as what flashcard for toddlers was supposed to be used of. Hence, I innovate the idea of using it as one of the tools that can help students in ESL classroom to provide better context especially in their writing lessons. Besides flashcards, I would also love the idea on creating posters that could help my students to get the idea on what am I teaching about. Not only that it could retain their attention, but also gaining their interest by approaching them with visuals that they might have not seen before. In conclusion, visual aids were one of the best selection of materials as it never gets old and will eventually be useful for quite a long time.
