My 2 high school teachers, who gave me the confidence to pursue theatre in college. I always thought I would be better off working in business or something, but I was always being told by them to do what makes me happy, and that is working as a theatre technician. My family understands my decisions as well so I am truly happy with where I am at right now.

One of my teachers taught me skills in acting, directing, and stage management. The other taught me scenic design, lighting design, sound design, and props management, as well as giving me all kinds of opportunities to showcase what I've learned. I owe a LOT of experience and what I know to them.

Throughout this module, I have really valued and appreciated each professor and TA I have been taught by. Everyone truly cares about us and wants us to take everything we have learned to later use in our degree. I feel as if I have made better connections with people than I did last semester. It’s been a lot easier and has made each day for fun. I feel like I am out if the rut of figuring out how I fit in here. I feel as if I have gained more confidence that will get me a lot further when we are back in the fall due my second year. I have done the work to get out of it. I have found the fun again in my work. I have tried to make more of a name for myself. I have gotten jobs in the industry that I just know I will enjoy. I feel like I am being rewarded. I am now feeling the excitement again.

I am excited to work on a show this semester for my production lab, whatever that role may be. I don't really have a preference, I just want to see what creating a show here at UT is like, and gain skills I never thought I would gain. That's what I've been looking forward to and what is my motivation for this semester.

I think/hope this experience will give me clarity about what path I want to go through in life. I've always thought (and still think) we are so young to be choosing what we want to be doing for the next 50 years of our lives. It's scary because we want to make the right choice, and work in such a risky career that making the wrong choice could be detrimental for our careers.

I have clarity now! I am determined to be a professional stage manager. I just knew exactly what I wanted to do for a long time, but chose the safer route. It was such a relief. everything just fell into place and I knew! It has made me very happy and very sure of things. There was not anything specific that decided that for me. It was just something I knew-like a gut feeling.

I see myself going to work professionally on a tour post college and adopting a dog. I recently had a conversation with a friend about him not being able to look that far into the future. Like with getting married and having kids and I totally get that. When I think about the future I honestly just think about graduating college and potentially thinking about grad school or starting my professional career. But it really got me thinking, creating goals can be challenging as we are still so young and don't really know where we will end up, especially come May 2025.

Ever since I saw a show at Bass when I was little I had dreams about working on a touring show. I'm not entirely sure what tech position I would want to have, but I definitely want to try and do this after college. My 20's will be all about having fun and doing the things I want so I think that would be perfect timing. Same with the dog, I am a huge dog person and can't imagine living without one (or two or three), so I will try to get on that ASAP as well.

For next year, either fall or spring semester, at UT or outside of UT, I want to go out and get a tech job on my own. Taking production lab and getting to work on 3 shows at once was incredible but now I want to trust myself on my own and find something. It could be anything and anywhere. I just want to experience my first time doing it as a college student with a new set of skills, training, and experiences to talk about. I’m currently on that hunt so I will eventually get there. I tried to get a box office job for this summer, but I got snagged by a theatre company for a show instead. I will also be teaching swim lessons to a 2 year old and taking a class.

I work as a theatre technician and one of my habits for preparing my stuff is drinking a cup of tea while I work. I'm not sure why this keeps me productive and on track, but it does. It can be any kind of tea but it's just something that helps me. I will keep doing it as it helps me become a better artist and collaborator. Maybe that will change and I will create new practices and habits.

I bring my work forward by always being prepared and ready to jump in at any time. During high school I dipped my toe in almost every aspect of theatre, this has allowed me to be able to work in a variety of different roles and help out wherever I can. It has made choosing what I want to do for the rest of my life difficult, but It will eventually hit me so I am not worried.

Last time I wrote about how drinking tea helps me. It still does. I found I’m the type of person who gets hangry so being properly nourished really makes the biggest difference for me. It keeps me physically healthy of course but also mentally satisfied. It puts me in the best position to think clearly and create. I feel like other people have very different practices and habits but this just works for me. So I don’t know what it is, but I do know it’s something necessary to contribute to be me as an artist.

Always being open to change and just being willing to create any type of art. We talk a lot about collaboration in this class, which is an idea we will continue to explore and create this semester with each other. It's something I am excited about doing. especially making connections with my classmates and the staff here at UT Austin.

We can do this by being vulnerable and trusting within each other, creating a judgement free zone, etc. There are lots of ways to develop creative ideas on collaboration. Since we have talked about it a bit in class, I have a basic idea on what the collaborative process will look like with my cohort. But, when we actually start to make art it could definitely change.

Hi! My name is Clarissa! I am a first year (will be a second year by the time this is due) theatre student studying stage management at UT Austin. I hope to one day work on a touring show or concert, and or work on a piece of theatre internationally. In my free time, I love reading books (currently I am enjoying Unmasked), running/working out, eating practically everything, playing water polo, and listening to music. I started doing theatre when I was 4 years old and instantly fell in love. I started doing technical theatre in high school and decided that would be my future career. I worked a lot in scenic design, but fell in love with stage management and felt that was the right place for me. This summer, I am working on one of the Summer Stock Austin productions, and this fall I am going to the this Assistant Stage Manager for In Sisters We Trust at UT! Can't wait to see how everything goes!
