etching is normally done to metal, usually copper, zinc or steel- plate.which is covered with a waxy substance which is resistant to acid. The artist then scratches off the substance with a pointed etching needle where he or she wants a line to appear in the finished piece, which will then show the bare metal.

Linocut is a printmaking technique, a variant of woodcut in which a sheet of linoleum is used for a relief surface. A design is cut into the linoleum surface with a sharp knife, V-shaped chisel or gouge, with the raised uncarved areas representing a reversal mirror image of the parts to show printed. The linoleum sheet is inked with a roller , and then impressed onto paper or fabric. The actual printing can be done by hand or with a printer

Screen printing is a printing technique that uses a mesh to transfer ink onto a substrate, except in areas made watertight to the ink by a blocking stencil. A blade or squeegee is moved across the screen to fill the open mesh apertures with ink, and a reverse stroke then causes the screen to touch the substrate momentarily along a line of contact. This causes the ink to wet the substrate and be pulled out of the mesh apertures as the screen springs back after the blade has passed.
Other techniques and substances can be used. Primary school children often use potatoes and paint as a fun task, but basically it is the same method.

Lithography is a method of printing originally based on the immiscibility of oil and water. The printing is from a stone or a metal plate with a smooth surface. Lithography can be used to print text or artwork onto paper or other suitable material.

Lithography originally used an image drawn with oil, fat, or wax onto the surface of a smooth, level lithographic limestone plate. The stone was treated with a mixture of acid and gum arabic, etching the portions of the stone that were not protected by the grease-based image. When the stone was subsequently moistened, these etched areas retained water; an oil-based ink could then be applied and would be repelled by the water, sticking only to the original drawing. The ink would finally be transferred to a blank paper sheet, producing a printed page.
Today, most types of high-volume books and magazines, especially when illustrated in colour, are printed with offset lithography which has become the most common form of printing technology since the 1960s.

Rotogravure or gravure is a type of intaglio printing process, which involves engraving the image onto an image carrier. In gravure printing, the image is engraved onto a cylinder because, like offset printing and flexography, it uses a rotary printing press. Once a staple of newspaper photo features, the rotogravure process is still used for commercial printing of magazines, postcards, and corrugated (cardboard) and other product packaging.
