Cormac mcCarthy went on the describe dead bodies in great detail. It's clear that he wanted the reader to visualize this section. At certain points fire means what fire usually is. But at points like page 83 they are talking about fire like hope. The fire is symbolizing the hope they have. On page 83 it states “and nothing’s gonna happen to us. That’s right. Because we’re carrying the fire. Yes. Because we’re carrying the fire.” This quote is one of many was they talk about fire like hope. Although many have not experienced the harsh, brutal journey that the man and child are encountering during their journey along the road, our group felt that the idea of being cold was something we could all relate to, and this section of the novel specifically focuses on that freezing feeling. As it emphasizes in the quote, the boy was "shaking uncontrollably", displaying the way in which nature has dominating control over humanity and the obstacles the pair undergo on their desolate journey.
