Music can be more than just technical skills and elements, it can also make you feel emotions. Ratliff's chapter on Transmission outlines the idea of how music universally conveys emotion. Ratliff's idea is that by transmitting, an artist is showing pure emotion rather than solely the lyrics and music in the background. Ratliff believes that transmission is more than just showing emotion, it is emotion. Ratliff doesn't introduce his idea of the term transmission until the last few pages of his chapter. This gives the audience a buildup to his main point. Ratliff uses an example of tone. He says that tone itself does not make the listener feel emotions, it is that the musician conveys emotions in a completely different way. Ratliff compares transmission to religion. He says that the artist must work really hard toward the goal of making the listener feel the emotion through transmission. I disagree with Ratliff on his idea that emotion conveyed through music is always through transmission. I think in most cases it is, but not always.
