she was not born into warmth. the earliest memory she could recall was not of a home, not a mother's warmth, but insults. she was handed over to the orphanage by her father who took her as ' a child who bring misfortune ' because her mother was died due to her childbirth. but again, no one explained why and no one promised to returns. over time - she stopped asking. children like her learned quickly that any questions only left unanswered.

tianwei becoming a quiet, obedient kid which makes her became easy to overlook. after all, the orphanage was not unkind, but neither it was gentle. affections was ratio-ed, attention given to those who demands the loudest. she grew up in the background, learning how to makes herself smaller, and forgettable.

it was until one day, she met a boy , younger than her named xiaojun. he was frail and often get sick. he always clung onto her as if she were something steady in a world that had already failed him. tianwei who understands it very well, perhaps it was because this is the first time someone chose her, even in the smallest way, it makes her feels some warmth beneath her heart. xiaojun followed her almost everywhere and tianwei always tried to become worthy of it. she often shared what she have, sat with him and spend most of her time with him. in his presence, she was no longer invisible - she was needed and that alone is enough to make her stay.

she made him a promise once, that she would always be here for him and she would never leave him like others did. it was a fragile promise, but she would be willing to try this time.

it took one night to end it all. there was no warning, a drastic fever occurs cause her to panicked. his breathing turned shallow and his small body trembling against her as she tried to keep him awake. she immediately dragged her feet to seek for help as she runs through the dim hallways , calling out for anyone who would listen. but unfortunately the orphanage was understaffed, and was too slow to respond. by the time she returned, xiaojun was already gone.

something within her chest broke then, not loudly but in a way it's still lingered. of course, nobody could blame her, yet she carried it all the same. the incidents broke her heart, it settled too deep within her. she told herself that she should have stayed, should have tried harder, that if she had been enough, he would not have slipped away easily. the promise she made echoed back into her ears, she had told him that she would not leave, and yet - in the end, she had.

after that she returned back to being what she had always been, the forgotten one. the girl who is plain, and nobody would pay much attention to. expectations, she learned only led to the disappointment. attachment only led to loss, and she above all, was someone people could live without anyways.

years passed, but the weight of that loss never truly left her. becoming a kindergarten teacher had not been a grand ambitions, but it was more to comfort her ache, especially when dealing with children. this choice was born from the simple, aching desire to be the person she had once needed, and the one she had failed to be.

in her classroom, she will make sure no child is overlooked. she noticed the smallest changes, the way their smiles falters, their haircuts and style, the way their small hands hesitate before reaching out, she responds to every call , no matter how small, no matter how ridiculous it is. tianwei learned where she had once been powerless, she needs to make herself more attentive, more present and unwavering to the children can depends on her for their supports. she would kneel to meet them on their eye level, speaks gently and offers a kind of patience to make sure they feels heard.

of course, there are some fleeting moments, when a child's cry, or a sudden illness occurs, cause her composure to falter, her calm demeanor would be cracked, just enough to reveal her fear beneath, still she continues as she always has - attentive and gentle handling the kids. bc she know and fully aware, that she had lost one kid that trust her, she would spend her lifetime to protect as many as she can.
