I hope to build a teaching environment for many ELL students in grades 9-12 that will allow them to better face the reality. I hope to build a classroom where students can be confident and tolerant enough to accept unfamiliar cultures and ideas. In this classroom, they can not only learn knowledge, but also face the life of different cultures. +This is often a difficulty encountered by many ELL students. Especially for ELL students in grades 9-12, because they lack more confidence and ability to face life independently compared to college students or adults. Many students have to face the life of different cultures and communities without the experience of independent living before, which can easily affect their learning. Learning is to prepare them to face life. So I hope that my classroom can make students relaxed and confident. The most important thing is that students dare to make mistakes and correct them.

If I want to achieve such a classroom, I need to be as close to students as possible and make students relax through rigorous arrangements and advance preparation. Most ELL students will inevitably be more vigilant in a new environment, so teachers need to be as close to students as possible and show that they are friends. At the same time, rigorous and advance arrangements can make students feel at ease because they will worry about unknown arrangements. Finally, I want to create an environment where students are encouraged even if they make mistakes, an inclusive environment that helps students get used to this atmosphere by standardizing them and actively showing examples.

Social Emotional Learning & sociocultural perspective

The reason I chose these two theories is that both theories build the relationship between students and society and focus on the communication between people and society.

Social Emotional Learning

It is very important for students, especially ELL students. Because they are students who speak languages other than English, they need extra support from teachers to ensure that they feel comfortable and integrated in the classroom and that they can effectively access all learning opportunities. Students need to face not only problems in the classroom and school, but also more problems in society. From a practical point of view, ELL students also need to build emotional connections. Many ELL students say that it is difficult to make friends with students from other cultures. This is because students do not fully understand and let go of themselves. Through the Social Emotional Learning theory, students will better improve this.

Sociocultural perspective

"Social cultural perspective: A perspective that describes people's behavior and psychological processes, which are partially influenced by their social and/or cultural contacts, including race, gender, and nationality." (Catherine A. Sanderson, 2010) This theory focuses on describing people's cognition of the environment and the impact of the environment on people. The benefit of this theory is that it guides me how to build a space that is relaxed and comfortable enough for students. Through the influence of the environment, the classroom can make students relax and integrate into the class on their own. This is especially important for new students.

Task-based language learning & Natural Approach

1.Task-based language learning

-This educational philosophy focuses on using real language to complete meaningful tasks in the target language. Therefore, it is particularly suitable for developing target language fluency and students' self-confidence. In many cases, students are afraid to speak in the face of real situations, and targeted practice is beneficial.

2.Natural Approach

In the natural teaching method, the language output is not forced, but let the students appear spontaneously after the students pay attention to a large number of understandable language inputs. The understandable input is what the language learner touches in the target language. The advantage of the natural teaching method is that students are not forced to use language but induce students to use language through this environment. This is not easy to cause students' rebellious psychology and make them more interested in learning content.

Issue

communicate competence

This issue is the ability to achieve communication goals in a socially appropriate way. The importance of this issue lies in the fact that students need to face social communication in different situations. For example, when students meet African Americans, how can they avoid the other party's taboos and communicate reasonably, etc.

Corrective feedback

Many students are not confident enough, especially for ELL students. For them, the unfamiliar environment makes them dare not make mistakes in this environment. At this time, corrective feedback can effectively help them increase their confidence and reduce mistakes. When students make mistakes, I will first stop other students from laughing and give feedback to students individually afterwards. These are all to help students avoid deepening their lack of confidence.

Bottom up and top down

For students, the benefit of bottom up is often more detailed reading and learning. However. Top-down reading is the method they use in most situations they encounter. It is important for ELL students to get used to and speed up the reading speed, because many students' reading speed will be reduced due to the conversion of language in their brains. Students need to prepare for future SAT and other exams, so the top-down reading mode is very important.

Display and real life

Many students are not willing to share their entire lives, but most people are willing to share some small things, such as what they had for lunch yesterday. Sharing these small things can not only make students start to listen and talk, but also create a relaxed atmosphere. With this idea, students will be more enthusiastic to participate in the class.

Meaning forms

For students, the most important thing is learning. This method can effectively enhance students' learning and understanding.

I will mainly help students to understand the situations they will face. Classroom and life are inseparable, especially in big cities where multiple languages are spoken. When students can exercise their abilities in task-based teaching and solve these problems through cooperation and learning, they can learn more through their own abilities.I think I would focus on cultivating more specific ways to face life in different cultures. When my students are ELL high school students in grades 9-12, the difficulties they often encounter are not limited to school and classroom. At this time, I think through more specific teaching methods, such as setting up a real restaurant dialogue. These teaching methods can not only arouse students' interest and help them better integrate into the classroom, but also students will be more prepared to deal with these problems because of these simulations. When they encounter the simulated situations in the classroom in reality, they can review the knowledge and face the problems. I always believe that the purpose of learning is to help students survive better in society, so we should teach students not only knowledge but also how to apply this knowledge in a specific way. How to transform knowledge into means that can be used in reality. In China, many students and parents complain that English teaching in China is unnecessary, because they don’t know how to transform the knowledge they have learned into means to help them. I think this is a problem that schools and teachers need to solve.
